(CNN) Gregg Allman, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band who overcame family tragedy, drug addiction and health problems to become a grizzled elder statesman for the blues music he loved, has died. He was 69.

Allman died due to liver cancer complications at his home in Savannah, Georgia, and he was "surrounded by his family and friends," Michael Lehman, Allman's longtime manager and close friend, told CNN.

Very sad news. And yet, kind of surprising he lived this long given his lifestyle over the years. I met him once many years ago in New Orleans at a bar called The Dungeon in the French Quarter. He was basically a drug-induced zombie holding an undrunk beer, standing against the wall beneath a narrow staircase that rose to the bar's second floor. I doubt he ever knew he was there that night, but he smiled weakly when I told him how much his music meant to me. And that was good enough. I saw the Allman Brothers Band live in concert at least 6 times over the past 35 years and loved every minute of every show.

Vaya con dios Gregory LeNoir Allman. And thanks for all the great tunes. [IMG]

So sad to lose the great ones :(

But he gets to play with Duane again; Heaven is rocking a little heavier tonight now that the Allman Brothers are reunited.

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed for me.

When they drafted Warren Haynes into the band it was like a resurrection.

kills me to know I'll never get to see him live again.
an absolute GOD in the world of rock.
the shitty part is, as these legends continue to die, I see no one taking the torch. sucks to say, but at this point someone needs to find a way to preserve Mr Slow Hand himself

There's a lot of talented young musicians out there, but the commercial music industry no longer promotes them. A&R guys are only interested in making money by pushing shitty, contrived and predictable pop music on the public. People who are more concerned about what the music video is going to look like rather than if the song is any good. Pop music is now just a sound track for videos that are pointless and mostly forgettable.

Check out the band Dawes. They are doing great things. Very 70s LA sound. Think Warren Zevon

    true
Kenny Wayne is one, even John Mayer, a dickhead, but an incredibly talented blues musician nonetheless.

Jonny Lang. Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Anyone invited to the Crossroads Guitar Festival.

When the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas opened for business several years ago they hired Robert Randolph to play the stage in their mid casino sports bar during Final Four weekend, Friday thru Sunday nights. They did 3 two hour sets each night and it was free to anyone walking by. Man, they fuckin' shredded it up. Best free show I've ever seen, and if I had to pay for it, it still would have been one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I've seen the best of the best over the years. These are the kinds of acts that should be getting air play until you're sick of hearing them.

dude, Robert Randolph can absolutely shred! more funk than blues, first time I ever heard him was on a late night talk show, Letterman maybe? I'm a big fan. Love the way he plays, Jeff Healey used to play with the guitar on his lap back in the day.
thanks for reminding me, now I need to put my Chet Baker thing aside for now, and play some Robert Randolph

    Letterman loved them.

During their encore everyone in the band switched instruments. Randolph took up the drums. The guitarist switched to base. The drummer switched to keyboards. The bassist pick up a sax. And they sounded awesome!
