I actually read a very good account of the Bath Massacre some years ago when the gun-control debate was going on hot and heavy, it may have been around the time of the Luby's shootings in Texas.

The main argument I hear from people is that they need guns to defend themselves against people that have guns. It's a circular argument that they have stuck in there heads. I've even heard people say the kids would have been saved if the teachers had been allowed to have guns. The thinking behind the second admendment was, originally, defence against the British. It was kept on the books due to westward expansion and the fact that there were dangous Natives and criminals and the fact there was actually no law enforcement outside of wandering Sheriffs and Marshels. Outside of rural areas I really see no reason for dangous weapons and no real reason for handguns.

The MAJOR reason for the 2nd Amendment has not changed 1 iota in 200+ years and that is this....

FORCE and the ability of every free person to utilize it in defence of their liberty and sovereignty is the final guarantor of ALL freedoms. Firearms, as a tool of force give a measure of parity to everyone willing to own, maintain and be responsible for them.

It really is just as simple as that. The veneer of civil society is very thin, given the proper circumstances, YOU are the only one you can truly rely on, ask those who lived through Hurricane Katrina for example.

Years ago a sexual predator got into my backyard to stalk my neighbor. I pulled my shotgun on him and he ran like a bitch. Do you think my neighbor was not grateful that I scared him off? I live in a major metropolitan area and if anything there are a higher concentration of crazy people than in the rural areas.

Why be exclusionary? It's just a poll, not a senate vote.

wouldn't it be really obvious how everybody who lives in a country with gun bans would vote?

Mostly that members from other countries bring their own societal prejudices toward the U.S. to the table 'Scribe, there is a REAL disconnect between what people who live in other countries BELIEVE about us as a people and nation and what is the reality, for instance, I'm pretty sure that some people on here believe that every American is exposed to random gun violence and shootings daily or at the outside weekly when in reality the overwhelmingly vast majority of people in the U.S. will NEVER personally see a weapon fired in anger in their entire lives or even be truly 'personally' affected by it.

And the swipe about this not being a senate vote is just beneath you... sorry but it is bro.

Could have managed the same with a knife or a bat.........as the popular gun-pro argument goes......"even if he didn't have a gun.....he would have used something else if he wanted to".

Only if you're prone to making assumptions.

Despite the "local" nature of this particular issue, this is an international forum and I happen to respect the opinions of most of the contributors, even those I strongly disagree with at times. You guys seem to assume that most "outsiders" would vote for a comprehensive ban on weapons, which may or may not be the case. But regardless, that doesn't negate the value of their input. Nor does it address the fact that many Americans take a strong stance against weapons ownership as well. Would you censor their input because their opinion contradicts yours?
