    Great for us to know our country is represented abroad by someone respected and who knows how to do things properly.

    Don't understand this.The Queen surrendered her income from the Crown Estates on her accession in return for an annual payment-the Civil List. As she handed over £200 million a year and receives £100 million in return-(most of which is spent on wages and upkeep of things which would anyway be a public expense and not personal expenses) anyway, it's hard to see any welfare receipts.
    By the way, the US Presidency costs the US taxpayer $1.4 billion a year.Maintaining a head of state isn't cheap.

    I don't know how to check the figures.But the cost of running the White House will be enormous-the size of the staff makes this certain. And of course all previous Presidents receive protection as well as expenses-last year this was $5 million alone.They are all millionaires.
    I quote from the article I gave a link to;
    "One may start with the tab “White House Office” in the annual congressional budget submission of the Executive Office of the President, but that is only an initial fraction. In addition, twenty-two other budget accounts, thirteen of them in other departments, or parts of departments, pay the expenses, and the salaries, of men and women who are in fact members of the White House staff family. Not only are those costs scattered through those twenty-two other budgets, but in at least nine of them the dollars are not in any fashion identified as White House. Realistic estimates have to be made"

    The Queen on the other hand in effect pays all her own expenses and makes a $100 million a year contribution to the Exchequer.Because it's an historical arrangement her critics only see the payments ( Civil List ) and not where it actually comes from.Her family get nothing unless it's for a State function.

    Why should it be more difficult to buy firearms? Do you think the criminals, the law breakers in our society go into a store and buy a gun and ammo? Im sure the gangbangers frequently visit Cabelas to purchase their guns .....

    If you look at the records of firearm deaths and injuries you will see that those involving habitual criminals are in a tiny minority. These guys go about their business and once they have achieved their aims that's it.Criminals in the UK have no problem at all in acquiring weapons but as using them in a crime adds a extra 5 years jail they rarely use them.
    You may not know that over 200 000 legal guns are stolen every year in the US. So even if a weapon is illegal it probably began its life as a legal weapon whose owner did not take adequate steps to keep safe.
    There are two problems with guns in the US. One is easy availability-so a skinny kid can just pick one up and go on a shooting spree.The other is the US mindset which so many otherwise logical people are brought up to believe.That guns are necessary to protect the American way of life and to protect against bad government.As long as people believe this nonsense the carnage will continue.
    It might be sobering for these people to visit the Vietnam Wall to look at the names.Then to reflect that while this was happening around twice as many Americans died at home from gunshot.Not defending their way of life or preventing bad government.

    Hasn't this thread about run it's course? The option to ban all guns in the U.S. has gotten a whopping 14% vote count while a VAST majority seem to agree that some steps to curb ownership by the mentally unstable or otherwise 'unfit' to own them would be a good thing. We're just going around in circles at this point with the same 2 or 3 (myself included) people posting the same points...

    Very well argumented thread in certain replies but i have to agree with the point stated above. Everyone knows where they stand and the last few pages has been repetitive. So im hanging the lock on this thread. If someone must ad something let me or a colleague know.
