    People walk barefoot in much of the world in even dirtier places. Since very few people handle their food with their feet or stick their feet in their mouths it's not such a big deal. You step in the shower and 123 your feet are clean again. The biggest hazard I see is the risk of stepping on something sharp which could cause a laceration. Even then very few people even in Asia and Africa have a serious problem arising from that. As far as bacteria and such on the ground, you have just as much if you walk barefoot in the woods or on the farm as on a city street, maybe even more in a rural area.

    It's not just tetanus. I used walk round barefoot at home, I got a piece of grit in my heel and it turned to cellulitis, fuck me, it was painful. Two years later and I still have to use a rollator. I looked it up on wiki and see it can lead to loss of limb and even death.
