That effect is done in many ways:
Original and the copy, now you have two images in your layers palette.
desaturate the copy, and mask out what you want to see through (the original colors)
To make the gray look more interesting play around with IR im not so good to describe the process behind, but search it up.

Try adjusting the opacity of your brushes along the edges..........to give it a more subtle feel......... Awesome stuff.....you got the basics down for sure........Keep posting......
