British IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon has died following a massive accident at the Las Vegas Indy 300.

The Buckinghamshire-born star, 33, was one of 15 drivers involved in a crash at the second corner on lap 13 of the season-ending race.

Wheldon, who began IndyCar racing in 2002, was series champion in 2005 and won the Indy 500 in 2005 and 2011.

Lewis Hamilton, 2008 Formula 1 world champion, said: "This is a tragic loss at such a young age."

He added: "He was an extremely talented driver. As a British guy, who not only went over to the States but who twice won the Indy 500, he was an inspirational guy and someone that every racing driver looked up to with respect and admiration.

Just some general notes from this weekend in motorsports aside from the tragic death of Marco Simoncelli in the Moto GP race in Sepang, Malaysia.

Jamie Whincup and co-driver Sebastien Bourdais won the Saturday race at the Gold Coast 600 in Aussie V8 Supercars. Ford driver Mark Winterbottom and co-driver Richard Lyons won the Sunday race after Winterbottom passed Whincup with 7 laps to go. Bourdais won the inaugural Dan Wheldon trophy for the highest finishing international driver. Wheldon was supposed to be at this race to co-drive with James Courtney.

Sebastien Loeb won the Spanish WRC Rally to move into the lead by 8 points heading into the final rally of the season in Great Britain. If he wins this championship it will be his 8th in a row.

There will be some sort of announcement on Tuesday in New Jersey concerning a possible F1 street race to be held there in 2013 with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

On Monday there will be a drivers only meeting in Indianapolis with the head of Indy car Randy Bernhard to discuss possible changes to the series to improve safety and hopefully try to avoid what happened last weekend in Las Vegas.

    Grand Prix of India, Qualifying:

    1. Vettel
    2. Hamilton
    3. Webber

A decided lack of spark I fear, and with two tragic deaths in two weeks and with the F1 season feeling already over, it's not much of a surprise.

I would have to put that one more on Massa. It looked like he turned in on Hamilton. It's just ironic how many times those two have tangled this year.

Being behind JB in the title race must irk a bit,but he has his health and a fabulous lifestyle,so I'm not feeling too sorry for him.Saying that though,I'm not privy to his life,so who am I to comment!

As for the crash with Massa,I'd say it was about 80% Massa's fault, but I think if they'd wanted to,either driver could have backed off and avoided a shunt.F1 is huge multi-million Pound pissing contest.

Maybe it's the whole Nicole breakup thing that's depressing him.

Yeah, you're right man, it could be the woman thing, but he should remember that yes, he does have his health and his wonderful lifestyle! Over to Jenson now though in Abu Dhabi to try and topple Vettel again?

A couple of good races. Spoilt by some of the drivers not playing from the same rule sheet as everyone else. Plus, that safet car period in the first race for replacing the bollard was a total waste of time. How obvious was it that it was going to get mowed down immediately on the first lap?

We didn't get to see the first race here in the US only the second. They said that each driver had either 6 or 8 allowed cutting of the corners before there would be drive through penalties issued. But some drivers had already reached that number very early in the race but there were not that many penalties issued. They said that the sensors in the curbs that checked for cutting had been knocked off over the course of two days. So after that happened I saw a lot of drivers cutting chicanes and there wasn't any penalties issued. Not too good. But still a good race for Frosty.

Yeah, I remember the guys in the commentary box saying the drivers had a certain number of "strikes" before they were penalised. Even if you saw the second race, you'd have seen Boris Said "taking the piss"* by completely straightlining the chicane on the back straight lap after lap.

*Credit to one of the regular drivers who said that when being interviewed by Larkham in the garage during the race, can't remember who!
