Default The Official Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) News & Discussion Thread

Alrighty guys, i hope we can have some nice discussions about the beautiful sport of MMA.

I also will post news regarding the world of MMA.

For those of you who don't know MMA:

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.

The roots of mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. Modern MMA competition emerged in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, although professional MMA events had been held in Japan by Shooto starting back in 1989. Originally organized with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors were pitted against one another with minimal rules for safety. Later promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport.

Right now the Weigh-Ins for "Strikeforce - Nashville" take place.

As far as i know the weigh-ins don't get broadcasted live. There will be a replay on http://www.mmafighting.com/ though.

This Strikeforce event has a wicked card.

    Matchups:
    Strikeforce Middleweight Championship
Jake Shields (No. 7 MW) vs. Dan Henderson (No. 2 MW)

    Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship
Gegard Mousasi (No. 6 LHW) vs. Muhammed Lawal

    Strikeforce Lightweight Championship
Gilbert Melendez (No. 8 LW) vs. Shinya Aoki (No. 2 LW)

Jason “Mayhem” Miller vs. Tim Stout
    Zach Underwood vs. Hunter Worsham
    Josh Schockman vs. Cale Yarbrough
    Dustin Ortiz vs. Justin Pennington
    Andrew Uhrich vs. Dustin West
Chris Hawk vs. Ovince St. Preux
    Tom Campbell vs. Cody Floyd

I, personally, am excited to see my kid Mousasi fight again. Since i like BJJ a lot im looking forward to Aoki's fight. Without a doubt the Henderson fight will be awesome as well.

Brock fought against a serious illness, called Diverticulitis, if im not mistaken. He is allright now. He will defend his UFC Heavyweight Champion Title against Interim Champion Shane Carwin at UFC 116 on July 3, 2010.

Enjoy your thread One. I don't follow MMA as closely as I'd like to, but Marcus Davis lives/trains in my town. I know he's getting a little "long in the tooth" so to speak, but he made us hometown proud back in his day.

Should be a good fight. Carwin packs a punch.

Carwin is an animal, man. Did you see his dirty boxing against Mir. He has serious power.
He knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga with a very short hook. Even Joe and Mike were really surprised.

I'll call it Carwin by KTFK (Round #1)

I'm looking forward to tonight's card. I think Shields-Hendo could be a snoozer, but the other main-card fights look awesome. Of course, you never really know with these things. Sometimes the least-interesting matchup on paper turns out to be fantastic. My DVR will be recording UFC 110 too.

It seems like the striking sports are far ahead of the grappling sports in Western Europe. As the British, French, and Dutch boxers and kick-boxers develop their wrestling and jiu-jitsu, they'll become dangerous MMA competitors. Stefan Struve is the only Dutch MMA fighter I can think of who's not primarily a kick-boxer. I think judo is pretty popular in France and the Netherlands (they won 4-5 medals apiece at the 2008 Olympics, according to Wikipedia), but so far none of them have transitioned to MMA, that I'm aware of.

Alistair Overeem has a Strikeforce title fight coming up against Brett Rogers, which I think he'll win as long as it's a boxing match (although I said the same thing about Andrei Arlovski when he fought Rogers ). I still don't understand why Overeem's not fighting Fedor Emelianenko, though.
