    Ronda Rousey signs landmark deal
    Updated: November 16, 2012, 5:52 PM ET
    By Josh Gross | ESPN.com

    Ronda Rousey Joining UFC

A week's worth of rumors were answered Friday when Dana White confirmed that Strikeforce female bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is headed to the UFC.

White told syndicated radio host Jim Rome on Friday that "Rousey did sign with the UFC," making her the first female with a contract to compete in the Octagon.

"She's a real fighter and she's very talented," the UFC president said of the 25-year-old Californian. "She has the credentials, the pedigree; I mean everything. I think she has that 'it' factor. I think she's going to be a big superstar.

    "This girl is nasty."

TMZ first reported the move on Nov. 8, yet Rousey, her representatives, officials for UFC, Strikeforce and Showtime stated that a deal wasn't in place, or declined comment.

"Okay I admit it...I'm officially a @ufc fighter," Rousey tweeted Friday. "SO excited! Can't wait to debut! Let @danawhite know who you want my 1st opponent to be!"

The UFC had long balked at the prospect of adding women into its fold because of the perception that there wasn't enough depth to create meaningful weight classes. Rousey's rising stardom had a significant impact on the way White viewed the potential for female fighters in the UFC.

White told Rome that during the next two years Rousey (6-0) had "four or five good" fights lined up at 135 pounds. No date or opponent has been announced for Rousey's first appearance in the UFC.

It is expected that eight women will move from Strikeforce, for which Rousey has been champion since March 2012, to the UFC in 2013.

Despite her limited professional MMA record, Rousey's aggression, cover-girl looks and signature move, the armbar -- which prompted first-round finishes for all her amateur and professional fights -- made the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in judo an instant star among female mixed martial artists.

I'm not sure who the "4 or 5 good fights" could be. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos has declined to fight at 135 lbs, which doesn't surprise me.

5' 9"/1.75m, 33-year-old B.J. Penn shows off his new, 175lb/79kg physique. In preparation for 6'/1.83m, 23-year-old Rory MacDonald, he put together a training camp with welterweight wrestlers Ben Askren, Jay Hieron, Tyron Woodley and Tarec Saffiedine, in part to hone his fitness and strength. Just looking at him, I'd say it's helped.

The relationship between sex and sports: UFC fighter Ronda Rousey claims sex before a fight helps her aggression, and several studies back up her thinking.
    By Sarah Spain
    for ESPN.com
    Dec 4, 2012

Despite what you might see on the front pages of testosterone-fueled sports blogs, sex and sports don't really mix. At least not at the same time. Athletes may be some of the fittest and firmest folks on the planet, but when they're competing, their focus needs to be on the field of play, not on playing the field.

Of course, once the games are over, all bets are off.

That's right, word on the street is professional athletes like to get busy. The sexual escapades of pros like Wilt Chamberlain and Joe Namath are as legendary as their athletic performances, and we've all heard tales of the sex going on in the Olympic Village (this past summer the IOC distributed a staggering 150,000 condoms to athletes in London).

But one might assume Wilt and Joe's romantic interludes occurred postgame, not pregame. After all, we've always been told sex drains a man of testosterone, thereby sapping his strength and aggression. You can trace that theory all the way back to 444 B.C., when Plato said: "Olympic competitors before races should avoid sexual intimacy."

For years men have trusted Plato's position, abstaining from sex in the days -- or sometimes months -- before a big competition. Athletes of all kinds have shared their stories of celibacy, but boxers are most famous for their deliberate dry spells. From Rocky Marciano to Muhammad Ali and Oscar De La Hoya to Manny Pacquiao, fighters have been putting on a chastity belt en route to a championship belt for more than half a century.

As for the fairer sex, at least one prominent female fighter thinks Plato had it all wrong. Ronda Rousey, the No. 1 ranked female MMA fighter in the world and the first woman signed to the UFC, said last week on "Jim Rome on Showtime" that she likes to get busy in the bed before she gets nasty in the ring.

"For girls, it raises your testosterone so I try to have as much sex as possible before I fight, actually," Rousey, 25, told Rome. "Not with like everybody," she said with a laugh. "I don't, like, put out Craigslist ads or anything. But if I've got a steady I'm going to be like 'Yo, fight time's coming up.'"

Roman philosopher Pliny The Elder is in Rousey's corner for this fight. He wrote, in 77 AD: "Athletes when sluggish are revitalized by lovemaking."

So which really old dude was right?

A study from Georgia State University's Department of Psychology sides with Pliny and Rousey, stating that testosterone levels in both males and females "increased across the evening when there was intercourse and decreased when there was none."

Emmanuele A. Jannini, a professor of endocrinology at the University of L'Aquila in Italy, agrees. He says sex stimulates the production of testosterone, thus boosting aggression.

"After three months without sex, which is not so uncommon for some athletes, testosterone dramatically drops to levels close to children's levels," Jannini said. "Do you think this may be useful for a boxer?"

Rousey has clearly done her homework. She echoed both studies, telling Rome, "A lot of the studies that I've read about it have not really substantiated the claim that if you abstain from having sex for that long that it actually raises your testosterone; you actually might start producing less. I think, it's like, you can't go [have sex with] somebody that day."

The fine folks at the Cardiology Center and Medical Policlinics at University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, seem to agree. Their study on male athletes reported "sexual activity had no detrimental influence on the maximal workload achieved," but "the recovery capacity of an athlete could be affected if he had sexual intercourse approximately two hours before a competition event."

There are no studies yet that can accurately predict the psychological effects of pregame sex. It may be different for every athlete. One might lose focus if she hits the sheets too close to tipoff; another may be more relaxed and confident after some quality time with a special friend.

If Rousey's perfect 6-0 record in MMA is any indication, she's got it all figured out. She and her male counterparts should be just fine as long as they don't kick it too close to kickoff, suffer any sex-related injuries or spend all night at the bar looking for a suitable partner.

As Hall of Fame outfielder and manager Casey Stengel once famously said, "Being with a woman all night never hurt no professional baseball player. It's staying up all night looking for a woman that does him in."
So if you know any women athletes...

BJ Penn looks better in that clip than in a LOT of his other fights. He just might have more talent than any other in MMA but it seams that he lacks drive. I like to watch him fight, i hope that he comes into his next fight in shape and in the right place mentally.

    Georges St-Pierre wants Nick Diaz
    December 6, 2012
    By Brett Okamoto | ESPN.com

SEATTLE -- Georges St-Pierre has made it clear he'd like his next opponent to be Nick Diaz. It appears he'll get his wish.

UFC president Dana White says he spoke to the welterweight champion earlier this week, and St-Pierre expressed he has "unfinished business" with Diaz.

    [cont.]
I wouldn't pick anybody to beat GSP right now, but this should be a very watchable fight nevertheless. Evidently Johnny Hendricks is making his displeasure known on the interwebs. Can't really blame him, although if it were me, I might take it up with the UFC privately rather than call them out publicly.

Ronda Rousey to face Liz Carmouche
    Updated: December 6, 2012
    By Franklin McNeil | ESPN.com

UFC president Dana White presented the women's bantamweight title belt to Ronda Rousey on Thursday, then announced that she will make her first defense on Feb. 23 against Liz Carmouche. The five-round title bout will headline UFC 157 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Rousey and Carmouche will become the first women mixed martial artists to compete in UFC.

UFC officials worked diligently to encourage former Strikeforce women's featherweight champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos to take the fight against Rousey at 135 pounds, but according to White, she refused. Despite Santos' reluctance, White is confident the highly anticipated bout will eventually happen.

"[Rousey vs. Santos] was obviously the fight we wanted to make at 135 pounds," White said. "We worked hard to make that fight. [Rousey vs. Carmouche] will happen and I truly believe the next one will be the Cyborg fight -- this fight first, then Cyborg at 135 pounds.

    Headlining, eh? Golly.

So, who's winning, Dos Santos or Velasquez? I fear a repeat of the first match, to be honest. I just don't see Velasquez as taking down Dos Santos, like, at all.

Yeah, it's a tough matchup. I'm leaning towards Dos Santos for now, but only just. I would like to re-watch Velasquez's demolition of Bigfoot Silva, but I can't find it anywhere (the UFC is pretty draconian about making people take their fights vids off the Web). If I can forget about their first fight for a moment, Dos Santos hasn't fought a wrestler of Velasquez's caliber, and Velasquez hasn't fought a boxer of Dos Santos' caliber. Dos Santos' takedown defense looks pretty good, but it would, wouldn't it, until he gets dropped on his head. Velasquez trains with Daniel Cormier, possibly the best wrestler in MMA, but I don't know who his boxing partners have been. I won't call it a huge upset if Velasquez wins, but if I were a betting man I would go with Dos Santos.

Speaking of Bigfoot Silva, UFC 156 in February features him against Alistair Overeem. Unless the roids really provided a huge, Jeckyll-and-Hyde advantage for The Reem, I have to anticipate a Dos Santos-Übereem title fight in, oh, July or so.

I noticed that the UFC will be 20 years old this year. To put that in context...

    - When Major League Baseball was 20 years old, the American League didn't exist yet, Honus Wagner was a year away from his debut, Ty Cobb was 10 years old, and Babe Ruth had just been born.
    - When the NBA was 20 years old, Wilt Chamberlain was playing his first full season for Philadelphia, Larry Bird was 9 years old and Michael Jordan was 2.
    - When the NHL was 20 years old, Montreal had two teams (the Canadiens and the Maroons), Gordie Howe was 8 years old, and Wayne Gretzky wouldn't be born for another 25 years.
    - When the English Football League was 20 years old, Manchester United were 2 years away from opening Old Trafford, 'Dixie' Dean was months old, and Bobby Charlton wouldn't be born for another 30 years.

MovieHound, have you seen any photos of Overoid since he got nailed? I am wondering how much he has shrunk.

I haven't. I hope he's still a monster, though. The heavyweight division needs another legit contender (as do most of the other divisions, it seems). I'm looking forward to the weekend's card.

Here is a picture of Overeem from the UFC 156 Pre-Fight Press Conference:

Hard to tell with his tracksuit on (we will know more at thr weigh-ins), but he does seem to be smaller than he used to be.

A decent card last night. Nogueira-Evans almost put me to sleep, but the rest were good. I don't dislike Overeem, but I was kind of pleased to see him get KTFO'd after he appeared so arrogant. I always like seeing guys with high opinions of themselves taken down a peg. That said, I'm not sure it was good for the division. Overeem should have been the next title contender, and I don't think Bigfoot has nearly earned a rematch with Velasquez.
