I think that you have to put it into the context that this was released in 1984. At the time, the effects were pretty sweet. Now it is blown away by today's effects. The set design is pretty elaborate. It is definitely a slow moving plot. Less action then most sci-fi films and more dialogue/character developement. I agree that it is over-hyped, but I would say it is better then a lot that are hyped as much or more - e.g. Avatar, some of the cheese superhero movies (although I do love them), anything Michael Bay touches, etc. Certainly you must see Bladerunner if you haven't. That is also a classic, but I think that one is worthy of the hype.

It was like watching a greek tragedy...in space!
BTW...its music reminded me the music in Gears of War....

Was never a fan of the Dune movie, but the Mini series was really good
