Just watched Shutter.

What is it about J-horror? It all seems the same to me now and almost all the american remakes are really poor.

Anyone a fan of J-horror?

Not to get off topic. but every film made in America for the last seven years for the most part is a re make or re spawn of a 1960s 1970s plot/ script the was done in this country or France and England. Except for the blockbuster big budget stuff. any movie made nowadays can be traced back to a plot from years ago to the fucking " T " ..
I watch mostly independent and foreign film even with sub titles. at least there is depth and a story.

The amount of remakes, reboots, reimaginings and rehashes is driving me nuts.

Now if a filmmaker genuinely loves a film and wants to make a new version with todays technology and executes it with a passion then i am all for it but i agree with you. These films now are just cashing in on a name for a summer box office. Look at the Italian Job, a remake in name only. The rebooted the Hulk only a couple of years after it was out and are now doing the same with Superman (well not exactly but you know what i mean).

There are thousands of unproduced original scripts out there collecting dust while hollywood spends money buying up "hot property rights" like The Spirit.....

Exactly what I said to a friend a couple of hours ago while we were discussing the new releases for this year. Except from some independent films, there is a lot of crap out there thanks to the big studios of Hollywood. The lack of creative talent in the past decade is evident. That's the reason why I don't watch Hollywood films, if I want to see a good film I always pick an european one most of the times or an asian one.

90% of all Hollywood moves are utter crap.....I too like you both most just watch independent films these days....of which there are tons of good and great ones...both American and European. There are also quite a few good Hollywood studios (Focus Features, Lionsgate) producing creative new films.

I tend to put a film on in the background alot. But tons of films i have seen a lot of times. Films like True Lies, The Burbs', Blues Brothers, Terminator 2 and so on i would absolutely bet i had seen well over a hundred times each.

But my dad is like you. He will watch a film once, if he loves it, maybe twice and that is it. A friend of mine never ever watches a film more than once. He doesn't see the point. I said it would be like finding an album you adore and only playing it once, then putting it back on the shelf forever.

The concept of "putting a film on in the background" is alien to me, I can understand listening to music whilst doing something else, but a film blazing away whilst you're not really paying attention to it is something I simply can't relate to, nor is the concept of watching a movie 100 times - I'd much rather watch 100 different films, my ongoing campaign to attempt to keep up with most new releases means there simply aren't enough hours in the day to watch older films over and over again.

I've thought about my statement concerning how many times I watch films, and of course there are some I've possibly watched approaching double figures - Star Wars I'd imagine being the obvious one, Jaws too, Bladerunner, Life of Brian, Airplane, Halloween (as it usually gets a screening on that day!), and others, but generally it's an initial viewing then maybe a select few again at a later date. For example, I picked up the Lethal Weapon box-set cheap in the January sales and have started watching them again. I bet I've not seen Lethal Weapon 2 since I saw it at the cinema (God I feel old!), or perahps when it came out on VHS. Yet I can still recall nearly everything about it. I'm almost certain I haven't seen parts 3 or 4 since they first got released. Given my viewing habits it does make me wonder sometimes about the lunacy of my massive movie collection, but I guess that's just part and parcel of being a film buff and an avid collector?

I'm a fan of horror in general (used to run and write for fanzines / magazines on the subject blah blah blah!), J-horror like any genre has peaks and troughs, it had its high water mark a decade or so back with the likes of Ringu, but as with Hollywood which insists on inferior remakes of most hit material, Asian horror is just as incestuous, constantly ripping off and cashing in on current hits and trends. As such the genre has largely run its course with all the ghost story stuff that was most popular, but there's still some really interesting and plain odd material that comes out of the Far east from time to time. Have you seen stuff like Tokyo Gore Police? That's just insane.

For me the finest film of the modern wave from the Orient was Audition. Utterly terrifying, and just a snapshot into the warped mind of director Takeshi Miike, whose demented filmography is highly recommended to anybody wanting to experience challenging and crazed transgressive cinema.

I'm a big fan of film posters, so this thread seems as good as anywhere to post some artwork for a few current and forthcoming movies. Incidentally, which films this year are folks most looking forward to? Battle Los Angeles out next month looks a cracker judging from the awesome trailer, and impressive artwork campaign. Only potential spanner in the works for me is that it is directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the helmer of pretty substandard horrors Darkness Falls and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

Couldn't people just skirt around the the spoiler issue?

By not actually saying it, but generally hinting at the plot of the film, those that have seen the movie will know what is being discussed, while those that haven't will not.
You don't need to just come out and say "I can't believe Norman killed his mother years earlier in Psycho and then carried on killing other people".
Instead you could say "I never expected that twist with Bates mother at the end of Psycho".
Then everyone that has seen it will know what you're talking about.

Come on!! Ringu and Audition were pants. Total pants. Ringu had a decent set up until it was a pissed off kid responsible for it all! Audition was an excuse for style over substance, hugely. If it didn't have the ankle scene no-one would have regarded it for more than two seconds and it would have disappeared into it's own sack.

I don't have films "blaring away" in the background. If i am writing then i put on something like Kagemusha or the like. It fills the room out with sound and colour and is better than writing in a room filled with the clatter of a keyboard.

You could, but what if someone wants to talk directly about say, the Black Swan. A movie just out with scenes people might want to ask questions about and discuss in detail with others that have seen it but keeping the reveals safe for those who haven't. It wouldn't make sense to have a movie thread where we couldn't talk about movies.
