The first trailer for Judd Apatow’s fourth directorial effort, This Is 40, has gone online. The film is a semi-spinoff of Apatow’s Knocked Up, as it follows the lives of the characters played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann.

The film also stars Albert Brooks, Megan Fox, Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham, Melissa McCarthy, Ryan Lee, Charlene Yi, Wyatt Russell, and Jason Segel. This Is 40 opens on December 21st.

Looks like it could be good.

Steve asked Rothman what he could tell us about the story for this fifth Die Hard, and Rothman responded by talking about what sets the film apart:

“I love this one. It’s called A Good Day to Die Hard, and two things make it new: 1. John McClane, the ultimate American hero, goes to Russia. So talk about a fish out of water, he’s completely out of water. And 2. It’s really a father-son story, which is that John McClane’s been a great cop his whole life but he’s been a pretty lousy father. He has a grown son who he’s not really been in much touch with, and McClane thinks the son’s a fuck up—that’s a technical term.”

So what brings everyone’s favorite hardened cop to Russia? His son, of course:

“So he goes to Russia, he thinks, to bail his son out of jail, and it turns out the son’s not a fuck up, he’s the antithesis of that. In fact, the apple has not fallen far from the tree, the apple has not fallen from the tree, which is that the son is a badder ass John McClane than John McClane.”

Essentially the set up is that McClane reunites with his estranged son, who turns out to be John McClane 2.0. As far as the villains go, Rothman said The McClanes make quite a few enemies overseas:

“It comes to the point in the story where they’re basically the most wanted men in the entire Soviet Union, and it’s the two of them against all of the bad guys. I’ve just gotta say, it’s a classic, classic Die Hard.”

Iron Man 3 is going to be Robert Downey Jr's fourth turn as Tony Stark (we're not counting that cameo in The Incredible Hulk). How many Iron Man movies does the actor have in him? I'd guarantee he comes back for The Avengers 2, and then...? It's not impossible to believe that Downey taps out after five or six movies*.

What does Marvel do then? There are big plans in place for the Marvel Movie Universe, and I'm sure the company would like to keep Iron Man in that universe. Where do they go when Downey decides he's done it enough? I took the question right to Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, when I sat down with him for a one on one interview. Would they reboot the series if Downey left, I asked, or would it be like (pre-Casino Royale) Bond, where a new guy took the role and nobody said anything?

"I think Bond is a good example. Let’s put it this way: I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn’t, and I’m still here making these movies, we don’t take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it."

I mentioned to Feige that it's easier in the world of comics because pen and ink characters can stay the same age forever. That's not a problem for the Movieverse, he said.

"I think [the character] can age with the actor, if the actor stays with it."

With Iron Man that's actually easy - Downey doesn't have to be in the suit at all, he can just lend his voice to those scenes (which I think is basically what's happening at this point anyway, as opposed to the first film, where he spent more time in the actual armor). And that could keep Downey in for an Avengers 3, if his role ends up being a glorified voice over bit. And since Downey will probably be 50 by the time Avengers 2 hits...

By the way, Feige led this answer off with a little riff on reboots. Since I earlier today spread a little Sony gossip about The Amazing Spider-Man, I thought it was only fair to let Feige have his say on the movie:

"I think the term reboot has got to go. I think it’s like after the Star Wars movies nobody likes the idea of prequels, and reboots have turned into the same thing. It means ‘Oh they’ve run out of ideas! It’s bad.’ I’ve seen The Amazing Spider-Man. It’s awesome. It’s totally fresh and unique."

* Actors who get into Marvel movies now sign very binding multiple picture deals. It's unclear what Downey's deal looks like, as he was the guy who came on when The Avengers was just sort of a pipe dream. If he signed a standard Hollywood type deal, he's locked in for three Iron Man movies and that's it.

1] "Iron Man 1" made me fall asleep many times. Never saw 2nd, no need for 3rd, especially after big Avengers group movie.

2] I don't think McClane has ever mentioned a son before, unless his daughter from the last one had an operation.

3] Speaking of Willis, thinking might avoid "Safe", as looks a bit too much like "Mercury Rising" (back in the day Alec was watchable).

Sam Raimi is boarding MGM’s Poltergeist.

Despite some reports, Raimi is not directing the remake but will help oversee the search for a helmer.

David Lindsay-Abaire, who worked on Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful for Raimi, is working on the script, which focuses on a family whose house was built on a holy site and whosedaughter is taken by ghosts.

Tom Cruise cast as "Van Helsing"

UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, May 1, 2011—Universal Pictures today announced the studio has signed a two-year first-look production deal with one of the leading writing/producing teams in the entertainment industry, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and their K/O Paper Products banner. The duo will kick off their new relationship with Universal by reimagining titles from the studio’s library including Van Helsing and The Mummy. The announcement was made by Universal Pictures Chairman, Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman, Donna Langley.

Kurtzman and Orci have collaborated with some of the industry’s top creative minds including J.J. Abrams, with whom they wrote the third installment of Mission: Impossible, which grossed nearly $400 million at the worldwide box office. In 2007, they wrote Transformers and went on to write Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009. Together, those films grossed more than $1.5 billion worldwide. More recently, the pair wrote and executive produced 2009’s Star Trek, which grossed more than $385 million worldwide. Accompanying their impressive film resume, Kurtzman and Orci have found tremendous success in television, having created the series Fringe, writing/producing Alias and in 2010, producing the reboot of Hawaii Five-O. They also currently executive produce the highest rated show on Hasbro’s The Hub, Transformers Prime.

“Alex and Roberto are extraordinarily talented writers and producers who know the value of a great story in building successful tentpole films,” Fogelson and Langley said in a joint statement. “They have been a major part of some of Hollywood’s biggest movies and television shows in recent history, and we’re eager to have them build on that success at Universal.”

“We’re thrilled to call Universal Pictures our home,” said Kurtzman and Orci. “From the moment we sat down with Adam, Donna, Peter, Jeff and the entire Uni team, there was an instant flow of inspired ideas. They really understand the importance of building a strong creative team and giving our shared projects their full support. We’re proud to start making movies that will live as part of Universal’s enduring legacy.”

Kurtzman and Orci’s K/O Paper Products will develop and produce a modern reimagining of Universal library titles including The Mummy, alongside producer Sean Daniel and writer Jon Spaihts. The pair will also develop and produce Universal’s reimagined Van Helsing, with Tom Cruise attached to star in and produce the film.

Kurtzman and Orci’s upcoming projects include writing Sony’s next installment of The Amazing Spider-Man; producing Now You See Me, for Lionsgate Summit, set for release in March 2013; and producing Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game, also for Lionsgate Summit. Kurtzman and Orci wrote and produced People Like Us, which marks Kurtzman’s directorial debut and is scheduled to be released in June 2012, and wrote and produced the second installment of Star Trek, set for release in 2013. The pair most recently rewrote All You Need Is Kill for Warner Bros., with Tom Cruise attached to star, Doug Liman to direct and Erwin Stoff to produce.

Kurtzman, Orci and the rest of their K/O Paper Products team, including President Bobby Cohen, will be housed on the Universal lot. Former assistants Ben Kim and Kim Cavyan will come aboard as creative executives. Kurtzman and Orci are represented by CAA and attorneys Michael Gendler and Kevin Kelly of Gendler & Kelly, APC.

Michelle Rodriquez will be back for Fast & Furious 6 and Machete Kills!

Those who stayed after the end credits of Fast Five will not be surprised to learn that, despite her character's apparent demise earlier in the franchise, Michelle Rodriguez is now confirmed by Variety to reprise her role as Letty Ortiz in next year's Fast & Furious 6. The outlet also confirms that the Avatar star will be back on the big screen as Luz/Shé in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills.

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson are confirmed to be returning for Fast & Furious 6 with many of the regulars expected to be back as well and Gina Carano said to be in talks. Details of the plot are currently few but Six, like Five, is expected to be a heist film and will shoot in Europe beginning in June.

Production on Machete Kills, meanwhile, is set to begin imminently in Texas with Danny Trejo's Machete teaming with the U.S. Government to take on a Mexican drug cartel and a James Bond-style villain who seeks world domination with a satellite weapon.

Fast & Furious 6 is scheduled for release on May 24, 2013 with the release date for Machete Kills still to be determined.
