Wladimir Klitschko knocks out Mormeck to defend titles

Wladimir Klitschko defended his world heavyweight title belts with a fourth-round knockout of Frenchman Jean-Marc Mormeck in Germany.

Klitschko's 50th knockout was secured with ease as Mormeck failed to cope with the Ukrainian's power.

Mormeck first hit the floor in the second round after a Klitschko right.

Klitschko, who ended the fight with a right-left combination, said: "I'm delighted to get the 50th knock-out of my career. I promised and I delivered."

In the days leading up to the fight at the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf, 35-year-old Klitschko was forced to defend the quality of his opponents following criticisms that former cruiserweight world champion Mormeck would not provide a big enough challenge.

And Klitschko, who was defending his WBA, IBF and WBO belts, overpowered his challenger immediately, emphasising the mismatch in weight and experience.

Mormeck, 39, endured a one-sided first round that saw him trying to avoid and then contain the champion's lengthy jab, before he finally succumbed to a right-hander in the second that saw him momentarily floored.

Klitschko never looked in danger and, after a scrappy third round where Mormeck managed to hold his own, the fourth saw Klitschko dispatch his opponent with the devastating right-left combination.

Puerto Rican referee Luis Pabon counted out the challenger, who was making only his fourth appearance as a heavyweight, leaving Klitschko to celebrate a 57th career win.

Miguel Cotto a worthy opponent, says Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather promises a "toe-to-toe battle" when he meets Miguel Cotto for the Puerto Rican's WBA light-middleweight crown on 5 May.

While Mayweather versus Philippine great Manny Pacquiao is the fight most fans most want to see, Mayweather insists Cotto is a worthy opponent.
"To be the best, you've got to beat the best," said Mayweather, 35.
"I can solidify myself as one of the best fighters to ever live [against Cotto]."

Mayweather and Cotto, 31, came face to face at Hollywood's Chinese Theatre to promote their fight, which will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
And, while many will hope Mayweather comes through unscathed so that a fight with Pacquiao will eventually take place, Cotto has other ideas.
Cotto said: "When I fought [former three-weight world champion] Shane Mosley in 2007, people said the same thing, that he is faster than me.
"But I beat him at his own game and I plan to pressure Mayweather."

Cotto has lost two of his 39 professional fights but Mayweather says he considers his rival undefeated because of the circumstances of those defeats.
In 2008, Antonio Margarito stopped Cotto, only for the Mexican's reputation to be tarnished when it was discovered he used illegal hand wraps against Mosley.
In 2009, Cotto was beaten by Pacquiao in a catch-weight contest, although the Puerto Rican claims he was weight-drained.
"My previous fight with Margarito, he took some things from me," said Cotto, who avenged that defeat last December.
"When I beat him, they came back to me. I feel better now."
Mayweather, who is undefeated in 42 fights, said he would soon reveal the truth behind his failed negotiations with Pacquiao.

The two men were in talks for a potential fight in May or June but Mayweather will instead fight Cotto and Pacquiao will take on American Timothy Bradley on 9 June.
"I offered Manny Pacquiao to fight for 5 May but he turned me down," Mayweather said.
"You hear different things. Soon I will put it out there and let the world see me talking to Manny Pacquiao and him turning me down."

Carl Froch to make Nottingham return for world title shot

Nottingham's Carl Froch is to fight in his home town for the first time in three years after getting a shot at the IBF world super-middleweight title.

The 34-year-old boxer has been lined up to face Canadian-based Romanian Lucian Bute at the Capital FM Arena on 26 May.
Froch has not fought in Nottingham since 2009, when he handed American Andre Dirrell a first career defeat.

He has since fought in Denmark, Finland and the United States, where he reached the final of the Super Six tournament.
But, having lost his WBC belt to Andre Ward in December, he now has a crack at the IBF version against the unbeaten Bute, in front of his own supporters, on a bill engineered by his new promoter Eddie Hearn.

"It's a dream come true to get this opportunity to become a three-time world champion in my home town of Nottingham," said Froch, excited at finally returning to the scene of his first WBC title victory, against Jean Pascal in December 2008.
"The Super Six was an incredible journey for me but I missed fighting in the UK."
"It was important I made that happen - and for it to be for a world title is the icing on the cake."

Promoter Hearn said: "I have to respect Lucian and his team for agreeing to enter the lion's den and face Carl in his home town, but am fully confident that Carl can become a world champion again."
Canadian-based Romanian Bute, who has defended his IBF title nine times since defeating Colombian Alejandro Berrio in 2007, is undefeated in 30 bouts. But it will be the first time he has boxed outside either North America or Romania during his professional career.

"It's my goal to fight the best boxers in the super middleweight division," said the Montreal-based fighter. "Carl Froch belongs in the elite of the super-middleweight division and it will be a great fight.
"I am very confident and it will not faze me fighting in enemy territory."

Lamont Peterson fails drugs test to put Amir Khan fight in doubt
Amir Khan's rematch with Lamont Peterson is in doubt after the American champion failed a drugs test.

Both fighters agreed to random testing before their light-welterweight bout in Las Vegas on 19 May and Peterson tested positive for synthetic testosterone.

"We plan to submit medical findings by Tuesday reflecting the facts in support of Lamont's good faith intentions," said a Peterson statement.

A decision on the fight going ahead is hoped to be reached by Thursday.

Goldenboy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer said the Nevada Athletics Commission would be assessing Peterson's evidence and deciding whether he would be allowed to fight.

He also confirmed that Peterson had tested positive from the A and B samples taken in March, but had given a negative test in follow-up samples from 13 April.

Manny Pacquiao has lost his WBO welterweight belt to Timothy Bradley after a controversial split decision victory for the challenger at Las Vegas' MGM Grand.
Pacquiao appeared to have done more than enough to take the decision, despite slowing down in the later stages, but was left stunned as two judges scored the bout 115-113 to the unbeaten Bradley and one handed the win to Pacquiao by the same score.
Defeat must now place the long-delayed but much-debated super-fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr in serious doubt.
