    Default Quotations Thread

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
    — C. S. Lewis

You're right, I should've assumed that people would seek this thread to placate their looming desire to quote the brilliance of one another's statements.

I'm waiting for someone to provide a mock insurance quote.

xD Same thing buddy. Quote is a derivation of quotation.

Short of "Favorite quotations by famous people thread", this rant would have been unavoidable--I doubt even that would have prevented this diversion, since apparently some people in this forum are awfully "famous" in our context.

Therefore, I would need the following title "Favorite quotations by public figures"--But that would leave us open to remarks by celebrities, in which I am not interested.

Therefore, I would have to alter it once again into the following: "Favorite quotations of public figures, of a socially progressive nature."

Also, the title implies that I am sharing only my favorite quotations. Once again: "Share your favorite socially progressive quotations of public figures."

Then again, no filtration is present to remove remarks by people who do not really deserve to be quoted: I.E. dimwitted politicians.

Therefore the following, which I believe would have removed all potential diversions: "Share your favorite socially progressive quotations of remotely intelligent public figures."

    I like you.

Are the quotations limited by any means or can we post as many as we like each day?

Post as many as you'd like, just make it sensible. Don't google a name and flood the thread with every recorded quotation by a single individual.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

    Case in point.

"A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong gives it the superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason."
    --Thomas Paine
