Default New season approaching: Phun's Fantasy Football (NFL) 2012

As a way to show that the NFL season is no longer under debate of an indeterminate start time, I thought to kick this process off early (not as early as the original June 1st date I had in mind, but this topic is here - rejoice).

I'm still going through the details and formalities of starting the league back up, but it looks as though Y! fantasy has gotten itself together and formulated some really kick-ass updates for the new season.

I look forward to reclaiming my title as the most adept player at this trade of luck-vs-skill statistical team building that has ties to a real sport.

(if I can help it) We'll have none of this skullduggery

If you'd like more information, well... just wait a while. Updates will soon be rolling in (league rules, how to join, league commissioner details, draft date time and format{!}, etc.)

If all else fails, and you still have questions, you can private message me to inquire about how to join (as I am the default commissioner from last season, but I do hope to split the duties/responsibilities with a respected member / former phun-LM).

What are the formal first words to kick off an NFL game - and there it (the ball) goes?
Perhaps the saying is the informal motto of the Phun forum itself - and it is up and hanging!

League has been started, invites to last season's teams sent, and (I think) the scoring setting is as 'base-lined' as it can be, while also continuing to be half-point per reception, and trying to revive the interest in electric kick/punt returners.

So, if you would like to join, or have any pressing questions about Phun's fantasy football, feel free to private message me for further details / instructions on how to join (personalised e-mail invite, or just the FW: league ID and pass).

To answer forthwith: as it is currently configured, the league this season will once again remain in the format of a live standard draft.
Now that I have a few seasons under my belt at this, I've learned that it is best to start / renew a league as early as you can, 'cause...

Those live standard [reasonable] draft time slots fill up fast, especially the nearer we get to the official NFL kickoff.
So, bearing that in mind, I set up the [Yahoo!] league to draft on Mon Sep 3 6:15pm EDT, or otherwise known as cutting it close: 2 days before the first game of the 2012 season.

If there is enough consenting community agreement to revise the draft date, though, I am more than willing to tweak what is in the best interest of the entire league; and to make sure I do all that I can to ensure as many members that are able to draft their players accordingly, (ie, live) can do so with no qualms with scheduling conflicts (work, family, holidays, etc.)

Anything else you folks would like to know?

As a note to all potential teams, whether new or old, I have revised the custom settings of this year's league to include a very small touch of individual defensive players (IDP).

The rosters we will be drafting will look accordingly: QB, WR (3) , RB (2) , TE, W/R, K, DEF, D, BN (6)
Total of 17 roster slots to draft and maintain.

It will not wholly affect the scoring of the league, but it will add another position to account for and research who is the top current player on defense.
It will introduce a growing in popularity segment of the fantasy football game to those who have not fully invested in it yet.
As a pro-tip: defensive players' totals on a per-week basis can be quite volatile, depending on the position, the opponents, injuries, and other team factors.
It will help all to know that linebackers are the most consistent source for weekly points, because they can produce modest-to-incredible amounts of tackles per game, they can blitz the quarterback and sack him, produce fumbles, and on the occoasional lucky day, they actually get the ball thrown to them (intercepted!). (Brian Urlacher, anyone?)
Cornerbacks / safeties have a better chance at producing the bigger plays, as they can defend passes, and if they defend it well enough, they will catch the ball, and return it for a gain of turnover yards, or even a touchdown! (Charles Woodson is perhaps the best example of the proto-typical CB)
defensive ends and tackles are perhaps the most volatile position, because they mostly rely on getting a sack or two a game in order to have them become relevant (but when they do, they become an elite name in fantasy, a la Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings). Also, stuffs, or tackles for a loss, can help score these positional players some bonus points.

to note for those confused or upset: since each team will only have to slot one defensive player each week, it will assure that every team who is trying will, guaranteed, be able to have a marquee name, "stud", on their team as the lynchpin. It does not guarantee that the player will produce consistent totals week in and week out, as any one who knows fantasy can attest to this, but if you can get a reliable enough name to hitch your wagon to, it can become an winning advantage.

Assuming the initial date I set doesn't change, you draft time would be the day after, sometime in the mid-day. (again, assuming you will be in Melbourne, I believe there is an 18-hour difference from the time in New York).

I guess I over-estimated (no showcase for me) ; your draft time will be on Tuesday, Sep 4, at around 8 am (the draft will start at ~8:20-25). Will you be able to make it, now knowing this?

In case it need be said: (for your info)

My title-vying team name (subject to change at a later date, if the fancy should afoot itself) in the Phun League for this season is Running Palms Up.

It took me a while to decide upon it finally; and most of my team names each year are rarely funny or sensical; but I chose this one after a few minutes' thoughts, one that ties it to a favourites sports radio talk program I subscribe to, and one of the hosts odd predilections of running palms up when involved in a sporting event, whether it be the company baseball game, or a show VS show match of a travelling kickball tourney. I have yet to see such a spectacle as it would be, to see a fully-grown adult male running with his palms up, either at his sides, or above his head, if there were not a box affixed to his grip whilst doing so-- I'm assuming it would be quite jarring, and quite hilarious, seeing anybody, anywhere, "running palms up".

    What about you folk?
If you are already in the league, why don't you share your team name, and the half-interesting story attached to it?
It will will help foster discussion until the season starts in ~2 months, and until we receive 2 or 4 other teams willing to play this year.
It will, also, probably be 2.5 times better than this entry.
