Agreed. I like Scribe and we got along pretty well.

Here's my opinion: if they are a TV or Movie actress, a glamour or magazine model, sports athlete, singer, dancer, chef etc.- they are a celebrity. From there, once a celeb- always a celeb. Easy peasy. If they exist only on Utube, Reddit, IG, FB, Snap, etc.-- they are not a celeb... even if they have a gazillion followers. No "airtime" on the boob tube or the silver screen- not a celeb.

Of course there will be "gray areas" like royalty, politicians or famous people from the news (Monica lewinski, some famous athlete's side piece, daughter/wife of a celebrity)... I'd err on the side of "celebrity" for those.

You’ve spoken about main stream media and mass media as kind of the line for who is and isn’t a celeb like you mentioned people not being mentioned on tv or being a household name. But mainstream media is changing. Miranda the YouTuber got her own Netflix show which is definitely main stream media. And YouTube is secondly mainstream, there’s hundreds of people on there who get more views on a video every single day than popular tv shows get when they air weekly. Lots of tv shows don’t even break 1 million viewers and the people in them are considered famous because TV used to be popular. Meanwhile youtubers have 10 million people tune into a video once a week and it’s whatever because it’s not TV. The way we absorb media has changed/is changing, the sooner everyone realizes that and accepts it the better. I’m pretty sure if you did a poll on the whole are social media stars celebs or not and had people put their age or age bracket beside it you’d say it’s purely when people were raised will be what they consider what because it’s similar to people who I see saying shit like oh the Beatles are real music, Post Malone isn’t after he just broke their very long standing record, like it’s cool you like the Beatles and you’re not into Post or what he makes but that doesn’t make it not popular with other people

yeah you're definitely right about the way the world is changing. I'm also well aware that some Youtube clips get hundreds of thousands, even millions or billions of views. You mentioned Miranda getting a Netflix show, I'd say considering that, she qualifies as a celeb, she has sort of 'graduated' in a way. That's why I said each 'internet star' should be reviewed on a case by case basis. I may sound like I'm very old school in my thinking but I'm younger than 40. I just think real celebrities are those who are their own 'brand' and have carved a major path their own way. Some Internet stars, as I said, would absolutely qualify.. but most wouldn't.. if ya know what I mean??

Two points - Would you consider Marilyn Monroe a celebrity? She hasn't done anything in 50 years so the way a lot of you are talking she isn't one but a lot of people consider her one, if not, the biggest of all time. Just a thought. Second point -
Something about this guy's post really struck me. I couldn't name a single Youtouber, Instigram person or whatever else there is to save my soul. This young guy didn't know who Ashley Judd was. She was named the most beautiful woman in the world in 2011. That is only six years ago. But I think that is going to become the norn and not the exception. I think that is just a result of how people get their media now. Maybe we need to split thing into traditional media and new media. No matter how big someone gets on Youtube they will never be as well known as someone on network tv. At least not right now.

I am not the final say in any way but I will just say IMO there will be no way to decide this shit so if you are a content poster and post lets say Maitland or ireland or whoever and you think that can fit in either section post them in both or just one but if you only post in one and someone else posts the same pics in the other you cant bitch about it.............as long as they upload the pics themselves and dont steal links.

ps. Scribe resigned from being an admin he did not quit phun. He has posted and or has at least been viewing almost if not everyday since then. Shit he is on now so no more need in bringing him up in this thread. :2cents:

guys don't worry the definition of celebrity. on phun it's just about where to post them not how famous they are.

pornstars are famous too... pornSTAR. but they're famous for porn so they go in the porn section... people who are famous for mainstream things like tv movies singing go in celeb section. THESE ARE JUST LABELS TO HELP US HERE it's not about who's more famous or who is really "a celebrity". the label on phun is not the same as the word in the dictionary IT'S JUST TO HELP US KNOW WHERE TO POST THEM :beerchug:

Back in the day, someone had to actually amount to something; made a movie, been a long time star on a tv show, sang a hit song, won a gold medal; or have done something else impressive to be considered a celebrity... Now you only have to appear in the background of some dumb reality show or post a video to YT, and you're a "celebrity"??

    Times change ! :thinks:
I try to keep up with all the new "Celebs", but think if you have for ex 100k followers on Instagram ... your pretty famous.
... and if you are hot, that helps to have a reason to be in Celebs ! :yup:

lets crunch the numbers.. 100k followers worldwide = less than 0.0001% of people worldwide following that person.

edit: I think my calculations are a couple of decimal placings off.. but you get my drift, it's still less than 1:1000 average Joe's on the street.

but in saying all I have on this topic.. what is/isn't etc... it really doesn't bother me if lesser known people end up in Celeb Photos forum.. because just like I do for other unfamiliar names.. I just keep scrolling. Makes no difference whatsoever really. Oh no I have to scroll for 30 seconds more than normal! meh. I think Scribe might have been a bit trigger happy.. but he seems like a great person.. :)

Celebrity: a famous person; the state of being well known. One need not be an actor, singer or athlete to meet this criterion.

This is the crux of the problem.... People accepting those with no talent as someone worthy of 'fame'.

Taylor Swift is at the absolute peak of celebrity though so that’s just not the same at all. You just said someone with 100k followers is whatever percentage but she has literally 107m followers on Instagram so of course more people will know her. That’s literally 1.4% of the whole world and that’s only if the whole world had an Instagram account and chose to follower her which obviously that’s not even close to being the case. But while you say that there’s a million and one peoplewho meet your definition of celebrity and probably don’t even have 100k followers because they play non lead roles in movies that people forget about or never knew who they were to begin with. Ashely Judd the prime example in this thread has 174k on instagram despite having over 1000 posts on the site and using it very regularly. And it’s nothing to do with what age she is or any of that either as theirs people like Liz Hurley who are around the same age with about 1m followers.

You say amount to something like making a movie is amounting to something ? Anyone with enough money can make a movie, see Tommy Wiseau. Anyone who knows the right people can get into a movie or tv show. But yeah it’s not impressive at all to have millions of people wait on you to film, edit and post a YouTube video which for some people are almost like short films. The amount of production that goes into some people’s videos nowadays is insane. The only point you’ve made there about amounting to something is the gold medal part where you’re literally at the peak of your sport and is a fair point and funnily enough Olympian winners are probably the least known people out of everything you listed now. In my country we have a pretty small population so if someone wins something for us you’ll hear their name for a week or 2 then back into obscurity, i’d say in bigger countries like America over half the population wouldn’t even know the names of their gold winners from 2012 unless they won something popular like the 100m or something. They could probably tell you Phelps and that’s about it

Open your mind and let go of the negativity. There's no mention of the word "talent" in the definition of celebrity. One can be well known for many reasons regardless of talent.

It's silly to keep bringing up Ashley Judd. She's been in at least 10 big movies, her Mom and Sister were a duo with 15 no. 1's and over 20 million records sold, and her husband for most of the 2000's was a very well known IndyCar racer, Dario Franchitti. She is also one of the primary accusers against Harvey Weinstein. Outside of dudes that frequent porn forums she is going to be much more well known than any Instagram star with 1 million purchased fans.

this is why I suggested a poll of members to decide on any name that is debatable on where they belong.. let the votes decide.. and yes, some people online do have massive followings and deserve a level of status.. while most don't. For example some chick who had a baby and bounced back and suddenly they have 5m followers.. but they are really nobodies who have done nothing, except that, and gone viral.. ONCE. Let's not forget Justin Beiber went viral ONCE.. had millions of hits on a youtube video.. and then if I remember rightly it was Usher's influence and appearing on Ellen and other TV shows and then his massive debut album that cemented his spot as a celebrity. So we can't just have a look at someone's online following and then give them the thumbs up based on numbers. IMHO it takes way more than that alone.

No doubt there is plenty of gray area here. Things are fluid too, especially with "minor" celebrities. Chanel West Coast wasn't always a Celeb but she is on a TV show and is a "rapper". She's not on the A list IMHO, but is a Celeb to me for sure.
Plenty of social media chicks have gained notoriety of a sort because they have a nice ass and like to show it off regularly. Are the Celebs? :dunno:

In the end I think any policy needs to be simple still and the mods will need to decide where the gray area ladies belong. I guess. :dunno:

P.S. I think Marilyn Monroe, Ashley Judd & Taylor Swift are Celebs. Chanel West Coast too! :)

Sometimes I see folks from the US questioning Celebs from other countries/regions. Priyanka Chopra is one example. She was a huge star around the word but relatively unknown to this forum except for maybe in chat. Now she's been starring in ABC TV's Quantico for 2 seasons. And was in the crappy but still "big" Hollywood movies Baywatch. I'd suggest that she was a Celebrity then as well as now. But the truth is that US Celebrities are most of what this forum covers.
