so how many doves did you get so far this year?

 

I'd have to double check but as of right now I'd say I'm only up to about 25 birds, so, enough to feed two people if you have something else to go with it and you're not real hungry

 

you shooting the yearlings or what man? I don't remember them being that small.

 

You know me, I'm shooting anything that flies over, but all we have much of down here are smaller, there's a couple varieties that are larger like the Eurasian(sp?) but otherwise fairly small birds.

 

the ones we get here are slightly bigger than bobwhite quail. They are almost as big as the mountain valley quail.

 

That would be nice, it takes quite a few down here to make a meal, I haven't been quail hunting in ages man, that's always a pretty good time as well.

 

when i go for mountain valley quail it is not as glamourous as it sounds. I just walk outside of the car, spot a covy of them and blast away. I have once hit over my limit with 1 shot before.

The best time to hit them is right after the first snow and there is powder on the ground, it makes it alot easier to spot them and if you know what to look for they are easy to spot once you hit them.

 

Yea, I used to go back in the day but now where I go pheasant hunting there aren't to many of them around.

 

you know they use to have DFG agents who's sole job is to hunt down and kill coyotes. But since they let go of the last remaining dfg agent where i normally go hunt at it is over-ran by coyotes and almost all the pheasants, quail, chuckars, cotton tails etc. are gone.

 

Yea, we had a real bad winter in Kansas one year and the damn coyotes about wiped out the pheasants, the birds are just starting to come back in decent numbers.

 

well i am sure you guys have some form of coyote population control measures in place, but where i go there is absolutely none. The only thing is the ranchers hate them and shoot them whenever they can, cause during the calfing season they would literally run up and pull a baby calf as it was born and yank them out from their mother's uterus.
