    yeah, tornados are pretty common around here during the spring. There's lot's of mountains surrounding me as well but there is a large river than runs in very close to me - perfect path for them. Pretty scary actually, most of the time when we have them there will be 3 or 4 active and 2 of those on the ground at the same time.

    So like do you have a tornado proof home and what do you do if one does form itself around your area? Is there like a city code or is it 'stay in your homes and hope for le best?'

    Can't have a tornado proof home - like I said winds up to 100 - 120 MPH will rip it apart so yeah, pretty much hope for the best. Lots of people build storm shelters - basicly a pit in the ground poured with cement and go to those. If you don't do that you just have to go to the smallest room closest to the middle of your house. The house I live in now has had several to pass over in the air but we've been lucky enough to never be in the path of one.

    I grew up in Illinois and know all about tornados, not least of which is I don't like them one little bit. One hit the street I lived on and tore it up real fuckin' good. We got lucky, our home wasn't touched but four doors down... flattened.
    Welcome to the Mojave Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. A 1/2 inch of rain falling in 15 minutes cause flash floods that used to inundate entire neighborhoods and cause millions of dollars in damage. The county is currently in the middle of building a $20 billion drainage system just to counteract the affects of that little bit of rainfall.
    The only tornado proof home is a concrete bunker. Underground.
