Actresses hold out for a variety of reasons, but I feel like the ones who hold out forever have deep body or religious issues.

Or they just don't have a reason to. Everyone likes a boob, but there's seldom a reason for them in a movie other than marketing. With free and easy piracy, even that doesn't work so that motivation is gone, too.

 

The thread should be...whose tits you believe we'll see in the next 5 years....and then come back to see who got it right.

 

Well that should depend on the role they played... if the rolis that of a stripper then going topless should be prepared part of the deal. And yet, of the top of my head I can think of Lindsay Lohan, Selma Hayek, Jessica Alba and Natalie Portman all played strippers without going topless... hell, Selma Hayek actually did it twice!

And the same should be true if the role is that of hooker or porn star...

Hence I stated 'clear view of tits' which in hindsight should have also mentioned no CGI, pasties or any other trickery/manipulation - it was a good shout though, probably the closest to date.

 

Would you say that damaged their careers? There's just no upside to it from a marketing perspective anymore. It used to put people in the seats, which meant box office and increased bank accounts. Now you can find a clip on the internet. For the purposes of telling a story, you don't need to see a full frontal or even a butt shot. From the standpoint of the actress, she doesn't really get anything out of it. From a director's viewpoint, the nudity becomes what the movie is about. It's a problem of fans' own creation, really.

Actual on-screen nudity is rarely necessary, but there's almost always a character/story reason they come up with. I think nude/sex scenes still can still sell and help your career. Alexandra Daddario in True Detective is the clearest example. She didn't become a super serious actress, but it made her more of a commodity than Percy Jackson did, by her own admission - which surprised her, but quickly got it, even if she also tried to play up the artistic aspect of the nudity. That scene was 11 years ago, but still deep into online porn culture.

 

I don't know if the scene helped her career so much as being a part of what's regarded as one of the best seasons of modern television. To that regard, take, say, Madison Iseman who did a nude scene in IKWYDLS. Didn't do much for her. If Dadds did it in a bad movie, it wouldn't make much headway for her, do you think? I remember a commentary from a movie where the director said if you show your body in an American horror movie, you're desperate. If you show your body in a french movie, it's art.

There are rare occasions it helps, but just as often it's nothing. Keen's leaks definitely seemed to boost her profile, yet many, many others get nothing at all out of it.

 

If Daddario wasn't naked in True Detective, the impact it had on her career would have been a total blip on the radar. But I guess it was a star-aligned kind of situation.

 

Agree with this. Even though the show was really good and critically acclaimed, Alex's role in it was minimal. It'd be just a small credit in her career, but the nudity, for better or worse, made her stand out and brought her more fame. I'd guess that a lot of the movies and shows she did in the following years happened because of that sudden fame. Would she have been in San Andreas and Baywatch without that True Detective nudity? I'm not sure. Oh, and I'm not saying those two movies were big or even good, but still, they were highly marketable productions.

 

I think for me, it would be, 1st - Katherine McNamara, Always teasing/alluding to them but no show. Still relatively early in her career but she's probably smart enough or not confident enough to "show off" the girls. 2nd is Olivia Taylor Dudley, there is a blurry ass photo and out of context/vague angles or extras filling in for her, but It could change with the movie "Touch Me"

I can agree. She did nudity there, but never again. It's an odd situation. It did seem to be her transition to the sexy role as opposed to horror and lighter stuff.

Anyway, my commentary is in the broadest sense. There are exceptions to anything, but I think most actors think there isn't much of an upshot anymore. Same reason sexy thrillers like Basic Instinct don't seem to get made anymore. Right or wrong, I don't know but I think that's how actresses feel. Yet at the same time, many seem to have no issues doing photoshoots in transparent clothes.

Back on topic, I still hold out hope some old trove of outtakes from shoots from older celebs like SMG will show up some day. One day these photogs will croak and those slides have to end up somewhere.

With regard to the ongoing conversation: I agree with a lot of what has been said about nudity,
- it's necessity is a tool used by directors/producers/story writers and for the vast majority of productions has no bearing on the story. However, there are a lot of other things such as cameos, explosions and gunfights all of which serve the purpose to keep the audience entertained (i.e. not get bored) and to appeal to a broader audience.
- it's affect on a persons career is dependent but the same can be said for a actors performance or their professionalism on set for example. Internet and social media nowadays have the biggest impact on career trajectories from a fame point-of-view.
- attitudes have changed - if someone wanted a role say in the 80's they would decline the roles that had nudity if they were uncomfortable with it, nowadays they are more likely to "haggle" and the end result being more body doubles or the nudity being removed completely - which some directors can take advantage of.

Scarlett Johansson's attitude to nudity has always perplexed me, she had many roles which teased nudity (thereby bolstering the movie/show rating and something she never talked about at the time) but later slammed Hollywood for over-sexualizing/objectifying young women resulting in her sticking it to Hollywood by going properly topless for an indie film 'Under the Skin' - which flopped and one reason ironically was for objectifying her. Yet when filming 'The Island' she was asked to wear a black bra in bed for the sex scene (as the movie was rated PG-13) and she wanted to go topless claiming it was more realistic and the bra was cheap - nudity would add nothing to the story and would change some of it's target audience and while it would have been more realistic why should it matter that much to her?

OnlyFans is another attitude conundrum, massive numbers of women young and old spoke out on objectification of women by men or institutions sparking different movements yet record numbers of women both young and old voluntarily objectify themselves on OnlyFans (and other platforms) for fame and money including current/former actresses and celebs.

 

No idea who she is but isn't declaring your 'tiddies' to be perfect demonstrating a good deal of confidence? She seems more like a tease than someone lacking in confidence to me.

 

It feels like Zosia Mamet's acting career has picked back up in the last few years. But if you didn't do nudity in Girls, then I don't think the odds of late 30s nudity is all that good. Allison Williams was probably the best looking 'Girls' castmember but it felt like most of the nudity was Lena because it was her show and she didn't care if you didn't want to see her nude.

Jane Krakowski has a "brief nudity" on MrSkin from 20 years ago but that door likely closed. Better odds of her than Tina Fey or Amy Poehler, to compare 50ish year old funny women whose careers overlap.

There's a few that if they're nude anywhere, it's tucked away on a hard drive that hasn't been used since the 2000s or they were in an email inbox that was automatically deleted after it wasn't opened for a few years. Maybe there's unreleased Maxim outtakes of Melissa Joan Hart somewhere.

To kinda change things up from losing hope in 20/30-something actresses to not having much hope in actress nudity for people born in the 60s/70s, someone like Zosia was born in 1988 and is 37 years old, just to make some of your bones dissolve into dust.

 

Technically, Alexandra got naked two more times, Lost Girls and Love Hotels, and White Lotus, but not nearly on the same level of True Detective. Although Lost Girls and Love Hotels allegedly had lots of strong nudity cut from the final release. Took years for the producers to find a company to release the movie.
