Olympics. I forgot. Hawaii is out of the loop with everything else going on it the world.

As for the wine. I was in wallmart with a friend and we were not even aware you could get wine in a bottle for $3. It was an adventure. There is no year on the bottle and it is half pino gregio and half chardonnay. Scary I know.

I have had some terrible $100+ bottles of wine and some sensational $7-20 bottles. Actually, one of the worst whites I had was a $250 1975 La Grave chardonnay about 18 months ago. Usually an expensive wine is better, if you're going in blind--but I'd rather buy 5 $15 or less wines and find 4 crappy ones and a good one that I can get again in the future than gamble on one $75 wine that, even if it's good, I can only drink on special occasions going forward.

There's a point where it gets really scary. $3 seems dubious, but still worth a shot; even if you find something that's only decent and not great, at $3 that's pretty awesome.

If you ever get into wine, the #1 thing to remember is that connoisseurs don't know shit. You find crap at $100+ and good stuff cheap. Certainly there are some special expensive wines that are pretty awesome and unlike most of the cheapies, but a whole lot of it is elitism. Buy a bunch of cheap stuff you can find easily, decide what you like, and if that's all you want that's kick-ass. If you want to experiment more, then go to someone with the stuff you like (and don't like) in hand.

But don't get bullied into trying to like something you think is godawful just becuase it's a $60 French Bordeaux.

Even a $3 bottle can be alright if you drink enough of it. Haha

I used to be a avid snowboarder so I am more into winter Olympics. I like soccer but that doesn't excite me the same. Maybe it is because I miss the snow so bad. My board it a permanent decoration in my living room. Doesn't do much good out here in Hawaii. I had to take up surfing.

Or, to re-phrase, in beer I _love_ Anchor Steam, Allagash White, and Chimay Blue. I loathe Bud, Chimay White, and Sam Adams Boston Lager. I think Miller High Life, Yuengling, and Sierra Nevada are pretty good.

There's definitely not a strict correlation between "beer-snob approved" or "expensive" and what I like/love/hate. And there's no reason wine or anything else you put in your mouth should be any different. If you like it, that's what matters.

If it tastes good, who cares?

When I was in Austria, they had some horribly sweet wines that were sort of sickening on their own. In the US, they'd be poured out or used for cooking. We think of Europeans as snobbier about their wine, but guess what? They said, "fuck it, mix it 50/50 with soda water and it's a perfectly fine drink on a hot afternoon". Wine's no more special than any other drink.

PS Alex: if you are ever making fansigns again, do you mind making one for me? Definitely don't put yourself out for it.

Someone recently made me some sort of wine mixed drink. It actually wasn't that bad.

Sure can sjfan. Might do some tomorrow. The list is piling up on me.

Basketball is cool. I never played it much. I used to play soccer. Loved that because you get to run more. I was usually left wing or center forward. Did volleyball for a bit too. Our team was too busy partying to pay much attention.

That's also silly. There's a lot of good cooking you can do with beer in a skillet, but that's "redneck".

For instance, next time you're BBQ'ing sausages, bring 2-3 beers to a boil and drop the sausages in that for 10 minutes before tossing them on the grill. Grill until they're browned on the outside.

Suddenly, they're moist and cooked all the way through without being totally burnt on the outside or requiring a ton of care and attention to get right.

Or steam your asparagus in beer rather than water (with the regular steamer). It'll come out sweet and tender, just don't let the guests know that you used beer for cooking...

I have more lower body strength. Booty power. Maybe you are more the opposite.

That sounds delicious. I wonder if it would work with an artichoke.

oh i dont have a problem cooking with beer, i just cook my steaks a certain way and wine is part of it and since i cook quite a bit i use a lot of wine, but if the opportunity comes along ill use beer, the sausage idea is good i may have to try that

Wine is more versatile. Having that acidity helps break the ionic bonds and serves as a tenderizer. Beer is just a moisturizer.
