Word of the Day for Friday, August 22, 2008

    Hobson's choice \HOB-suhnz-CHOIS\, noun:
A choice without an alternative; the thing offered or nothing.

Fagan's defense revolves around his insistence that he faced a Hobson's choice and had to act.
-- Laura Parker, "Discovery of daughters never followed by reunion", USA Today, May 11, 1999

They're faced with a Hobson's choice: Make the plunge . . . or face a terrifying alternative -- gradual extinction.
-- Heather Green, "The Great Yuletide Shakeout", Business Week, November 1, 1999

The origin of the term Hobson's choice is said to be in the name of one Thomas Hobson (ca. 1544-1631), at Cambridge, England, who kept a livery stable and required every customer to take either the horse nearest the stable door or none at all.

What a jerk. Leave it to the British to make it into an idiomatic phrase.

That listlessness you speak of must be very good. I used to enjoy it up until a few months ago :D
Objectivity comes easy to someone such as you(perhaps me, too), but so does abject conformity.

This is part of a 2 million dollar project that includes 24 servers, a robot that picks meds, carts that hold the meds, printers that print armbands with barcodes as to not mistake patient id, scanners to scan armbands for patient id....etc. The conference calls are an absoloute necessity to make sure everyone is on the same page. The unfortuneate part of it is that some of it is technical and some of it is nursing related but yet all parties have to listen to the entire call - wether it involves you or not.

I'd rather not think that I see things as hopeless, I'm just pragmatic, maybe to a fault.
She lied to the grand jury, they don't like that. She deserves some measure of clemency though imo.
    Howdy Ed! :D

I understand. I've been in a position of some relevance before when I ran a shipping department. I'd get sucked into these discussions that involved representatives from each department - sales, manufacturing, etc - that would just bore me to tears. The meetings were generally face to face though, sitting around a conference table. I'd sit there and listen to all the bullshit and then inevitably they'd all turn to me and some jamoke would say, "You can get it shipped on time, right?"

Meanwhile, shit has been piling up on the dock while I sat there being totally unproductive for 30 minutes. I hate office work. ;)

Evidently we're talking about work, which is rather dull. Why don't you do us all a favor and change the subject. :D

Supposedly ROI says it will pay for itself in 3 years. The big difference in all of this is taking the human mistake factor out of play. The reason there are so many servers is that there's different funtions running. They check patient allergies, drug interaction between drugs, make sure it's the correct dosage of said meds, and a robot pics the meds instead of a human. In the end the insurance we pay is dramaticly dropped not to mention law suits that don't happen because of a nurse giving the wrong dosage or a pharmacist filling an incorrect perscription. We are only in phase 1 of the go-live so only time will tell.
