    There's a book titled 'Longitude' by author Dava Sobel you might be interested in reading. It tells the story of how a genius finally figured out how to take accurate measures of longitude without having to rely on dead reckoning any more.

    The one's here look a little different from that one. I can't remember the actual name for them but it's barely smaller than that one. Yes, they're really that big. I've never been stung by one (knock on wood) and hope like hell I never do.
