My "other jobs" pedigree:
-Fine artist
-Retail store manager
-Laborer

 

I took piano lessons from ages 7-10. I hated it. I wanted to be a drummer, and I got my "wish" (if you consider hours of practice every day a wish granted)...

 

The irony is....

 

When I studied formal percussion, the keyboards of the xylophone, marimba, et al, are essentially piano keyboards.

 

I am opting to learning now twenty years later than I initially wanted... but even though I want to be classically-trained, I think learning to play well is higher on my priority.

Most kids that learn piano when they are younger are taught to play "classically", and that is why it is frustrating for them. It is an entirely diffeent animal from modern piano, yet there are little to any teachers of it.

 

I mentioned to Magge that I'll upload some of my band's original songs somewhere. Just can't figure out where to put them...

It is a professional file-uploader that is beyond words at what its capabilites are. Form and functionality of it are outstanding.

 

My parents insisted that I be taught all the songs in a hymnal. So that's what the teacher taught me. She lacked the knowledge of jazz and rock chord progressions, and how to notate them. Sad.

Yeah. A good analogy that I heard is that few piano teachers become rockstar pianists, yet even fewer world-famous professional pianists become music teachers.

They teach and learn the art in two different ways, just channeling the same medium.

 

The piano is an incredible instrument. The problem is that the teachers don't give you the full tilt. Jazz snobs or classical snobs. As a pro musician, you learn quickly that chords move as they move no matter what the musical style. Find a teacher that is well-versed in everything, and tell him/her you want a full education.

And, you don't need a teacher with a performance-hall pedigree. You want a teacher who can teach. Big difference.
