I'm a bit different. On-field behavior is key, but it's tough to like a Mike Tyson when he's beating his wife outside the ring. As a die-hard Red Sox fan I love the 2004 team, but Lowe is an asshole and Wakefield is by all accounts a very nice guy. That definitely plays in to how I feel about people. Certainly Bonds on the field would've out-hit 80% of the DHs in the AL, but his baggage is enough that even GMs (let alone fans) wouldn't take him.

I'd guess even a lot of Atlanta fans would hate Michael Vick even though he'd definitely have helped them on the field last year.

Yes, on field production earns you some slack. Ted Williams was a bit of a jerk, but not in totally obscene ways. His production leaves him beloved in Boston. But a Ty Cobb, Barry Bonds, Tyson, Kobe, (or Vick, though he's a lesser athlete than them) level of jerk will always be viewed by the majority of sports fans as a mixed bag despite on-field production. A Jesse Owens, Jim Brown, Jackie Robinson, or Lawrence Taylor will always be beloved for more than just their (copious) on-field production.

That aside, when a player helps force Shaq out of town and as a consequence probably costs the team a couple of titles, I'd think that would count for something among Lakers fans. But yeah, as long as he's there you gotta root for him I guess.

 

This game is geeting a little too close for me.

I dont see how you can lump kobe in with vick and tyson, kobe is a womanizer like most professional athletes, nothing like tyson and vick, bonds is just the poster child of the steroid era even though he was on a level field with most other players at the time because they all used them

in the long run the right thing to do was keep kobe, they couldnt keep them both for what they wanted so they let a declining shaq go and kept kobe, hes matured since then and from what it looks like his teammates really do enjoy playing with him and look to him as a leader
