    But i would have thought Galveston was generally better protected than New Orleans anyway; big old port, right? Oil?

    Galveston is known for its historic neighborhoods and a ten-mile (16 km) long, 17 foot (5 m) high seawall designed to protect the city from floods and hurricane storm surge.

    There's a world of difference between the Texas Coast (in that area) and the Louisiana coast. None of the Louisiana coast is developed. All the major ports are far upstream on the Misissippi River.
