    The bulk of marriage history was defined as essentially a business deal between two families. Marriage as a romantic gesture/institution was invented in the late 1800's to sell white wedding gowns. In today's world all the legal benefits of a marriage certificate can be obtained with a quick trip to your attourney.

    Personally, I don't need the churches' blessing or the state's sanction to approve who I choose to share my private life with. Marriage has nothing to do with raising kids.

    It doesn't, but with marriage it comes with responsibilities and rights. You cannot make life altering decisions for somebody else that isn't a blood relative unless you are married. For example if your spouse is incapacitated and cannot make their own decisions as a spouse you have that right. It is about taking care of the person you love and them trusting you enough to make the right decisions for them.
