My company is on an overtime ban right now. Nobody is allowed to go over 40 hours.

 

shit I think I have over 160+ hours of overtime right now!

my company is in a hiring freeze, but it happens every year at this time when they start looking at next years budget.

of course, since AIG is getting bailed out, and forced to sell off pieces of its business, my company could be growing by purchasing what they are forced to sell.

they were bailed out with a loan, since they have to repay/restructure/sell off, there is still instability in the company. not to mention, it just put the nation itself further into debt.

They were the #1 insurance company in the world, #2 in the US. (MetLife #2 in the world, #1 in the US). I work for MetLife, if I worked in the home office I am pretty sure that I would see VPs and higher just droolling over some of the pieces that are supposed to be sold off.

Blimp - Snoopy 2, but just when it was parked. The absolute only people allowed in it when flying, the pilot and co-pilot, nobody else. They have made that very, very clear. And can you believe we actually get complaint calls from people when the blimp goes over them and the way to sporting events?

How/Why - Most insurance companies take risks on investments, small risks, but they are still there. In order to pay a $1 million life insurance policy, money collected for premiums is placed into the stock market, real estate, and bonds. Typically real estate and stock markets will have an annual increase that will take care of a normal amount of risk. Additional risk is absorbed by the people who by term insurance and then don't die. They don't get that money back when the term is up, or if they cancel the policy.

Problem that occurred,
1. Real Estate plummetted, so any items purchased you could no longer sell at a profit or break-even, had to take a loss.

2. The fluxuating interest rates that were locked for 2-3 years at such a low rate, finally renewed this year for almost everybody who bought stuff. The new rates were amazingly high and forced most to sell the houses at a loss, forcing people to cash in their stocks.

3. Cashing stocks meant less money for companies to invest and led to job cuts.

4. Job cuts, leads to market instability.

5. Market instability means you cannot get the rate of return you need for investments.

6. Have multiple catastrophes hit the US where you need to pay a claim, then........

7. A large company goes bankrupt (Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, AIG)
