The issue is about if the US would be better if we had a third political party. You brought up two past president that during their time might have some relevance but what does that have to do with anything that is going on at the present? The US has always have a history of just 2 political system. Third parties have come and gone but have never been any successful for any prolonged period of time. Is it because the American people throughout history has consistently chosen and only wanted 2? You are basically endorsing 1 third party that is the libertarian party. But Libertarians are just more of an extreme fringe of the republican party. So how can you expect the a majority of moderate americans to vote for sucha group? Maybe that is why they have never reach any prominence in our system in the first place. Like i said, it is just not our nature to have that many choices. That and we will not be better served with a third party in public office. Maybe at a local level where there are some nuances to that demographic group, but as a whole most democrats and republicans are in line with what the american people want anyways.

 

My original point was that we need a third party to shake up the status quo, which isn't functioning in the best interests of the people. If a third party nudges out one or the other party and we return to a two party system, so be it. But it won't be long until another third party would need to come along and shake things up again. This is what happened with Jackson (Democratic party) and Lincoln (Republican party). They both brought about needed change.

As it stands, those two parties have allowed the political system to derteriorate to the point that it's flaws outweigh it's benefits. People who say change comes from within are only right when speaking of individuals. Conglomerates need to be undermined by a different or better paradigm. This applies to corporations, governments and political parties equally. Change comes from thinking outside the box, something I think the entrenched parties are incapable of. At least they show no real interest in doing so. It's all just lip service.
