Does any builder care about quality anymore? The new homes that have gone up in the last 15 years look like they're slapped together ... even the "McMansions."

I've been helping a friend remodel his kitchen.

At least their right angles are square... For the most part.

I've never worked on cookie cutter subdivision houses, only custom homes, but the general overall quality is certainly questionable in either case. I blame it on the framing carpenters.

So I see. Looks like you've had some interesting issues to deal with.

My house was the same way - the architect (of all people) that drew up the plans had the foundation out of square - luckily the builder that I hired was able to "fix" the issue before the walls went up.

Cost cutting on materials doesn't always affect quality. Cost cutting on skilled and capable workers does.

An experienced builder with experienced subcontractors will catch that shit 99.9% of the time. Architects and engineers are generally distrusted to do their job right.

The problem we encountered was a result of settling over the years for the most part. It's an old house in what used to be a rural district of town 35 years ago when it was built. But, granted, it was a POS in the first place.

 

The house I lived in for part of my marriage was built in 1919. A LOT of settling occurred with that one. We were in the historic district of a nearby city.
