Shit, looks like i've got to go to Cleveland, Ohio in the next couple of months for training classes. Never been there but it's to damn cold up there already for me.

 

yep, it's that time of year. With the time changing this weekend it's only going to be worse. I hate coming to work and going home and it being dark already.

 

That's pretty far away isn't it?
Are you gonna stay there the whole time, or are you going up there for like a week at a time?

Yeah, it's just south of Chicago on the northeast quadrant of the US. The class is 4 days so i'll fly out the day before it starts and usually fly home the day it's over - just depends on if I can get a flight or not.

No, just to one class. The rest of the training will be onsite as we build the new system.

Why do you need a new system?

 

We have many different systems here. Each serves it's own purpose. This particular one is a fetal monitoring/noting application for our Labor & Delievery unit. I've got in the neighborhood of 75 windows servers in house that serves about 50 different specialty applications.

It is replacing a old system. That company got bought out and is discontinuing support so we have to replace it.

Yep, i've known for quite some time. Don't really want to go into it because it always causes a political arguement on here.

Thank God no, just one system. We are at the same deploying a wireless network through the entire hospital though - that's going to be a huge job.

Nah, the wap's we are getting are capable of transmitting 3 different types of protocols at the same time. We'll use B for ours and probably N for the other network. We've only got 1 other so it shouldn't be a big deal.

It's below 0C at night, and around 7C or 8C during the day I think.

yeah, the wap's are the "hotspots" - wireless access points or wap for short. We're putting them on 9 floors. We'll run cat 5 ethernet to each one from our wired network and create 2 seperate subnets - 1 for the medical equipment and 1 for the visitors to use. That way we can keep our rules setup the way we need them on the firewall so that dumbass people don't get viruses, malware, etc... on our network.

That is pretty cold. Especially the first few days it gets down to that. Takes a while for the body to adjust.
