Not really, McCain out of all of the rep nominees was the most liberal. He supported a lot of democratic legislation.

 

McCain would've had to raise and create new taxes too, there's no getting around it, he just wasn't going to say it. Both Reagan and Bush 1 did the same thing when their economic policies proved pollyanish.
