setting it up so that favorable teams with high expected viewership will make it longer into the playoffs or finals. Having "company" men to ref the games and make calls for or against a certain team. If you notice some players that people pay to see like kobe, shaq, etc. gets away with alot more fouls than most other players. That is because these star players are what attracts people to the game.

I believe Donaghy was an isolated incident, professional sports bring in the money regardless of who wins, if there was cheating and rigged games set up by the front office it would completely kill the integrity of the league, i dont see how it would be worth it

That is why not everybody is involved. You can talk to any ex player and they will all tell you they have suspicions. and in some cases they know of specific incidences that a game was called for a certain reason to go a certain way. In ALL sports you have refs and people associated with the game that are asked to make "judgement" calls. Sometimes they don't even make a call at all. If they are so focused on removing any suspicion and doubt why is it that they don't use QuesTech but allow umpires to make up to a 10% error on what should or should not be called balls and strikes? 10% is a huge difference in a batter getting to hit a ball or not when scores are within a run or two.

maybe they didn't want him to win. :p
if people bet heavily on a certain outcome they push it towards the other point spread in football. The team that is the better team will still win but the outcome is just enough over or under the spread to benefit them. Don't tell me they are happy with just winning the juice money. :p

i dont know much about baseball so i cant really say there, but ive watched and played basketball my whole life, and i have to say the truly bad calls are rare and seeing them on a game winning play is even less likely, most of the time they leave the whistles in their pocket to close the game because they dont want to be what decided the game

I knew Donaghy. We went to the same HS. Different years, but the same.

Douche bag then, but his pops was a supreme douche bag.

I'm friends with a current NBA ref. He was not caught up in any of the BS, but his NBA life has change dramatically since the Donaghy BS.

no doubt star players get the benefit on calls - especially fouls in basketball. As you said the stars attract people (tickets buyers & TV viewers).

I'd be amazed if refs were influenced by the league to make calls to insure a desired winner. The risk of loss of credibility is way too high in my view.

Fair point - baseball management looked the other way when steroids markedly increased the number of home runs hit and brought a lot of excitement (and increased ticket sales & TV viewership) to baseball. But this in and of itself did not cause a certain team to win.
