Looks like the record breaking temperatures and the high winds have combined to do the damage, sweeping the fires into towns before people even had a chance to evacuate.

 

I know it's summer there. The city of Alice's temperatures are famous on The Weather Channel. "Cold snaps" was the wrong phrase; I thought I had heard that the temps were plunging lower after the hot spells -- not "winter low," but just big fluctuations.

 

Im trying to be polite....

 

Alice Springs is in the centre; surrounded by desert. They don't get a lot of brush fires in there.

It's almost always in the south and the east. As here.
