    If they'd kept the last twenty minutes they'd originally shot of the ending, from the book, the film might have worked better.

    But the studio wanted an `uplifting` ending, instead of the miserable, slightly horrifying ending they filmed.

    Hence, the failure.

    No; The Motion Picture is 1, the first, and this is 11th. So, 10 sequels.

    The San Francisco they show you after Pike tells him to enlist in Starfleet is future-modern and built up. So, i think they've taken it out.

    They've had to play fast and loose with the canon anyway as the years have passed by, the Eugenics Wars being the best example. Excising a pan-global nuclear conflict was always going to be next on the list.
