    Actually, Leno got fucked by NBC, and this is the result. NBC said all along they were grooming Conan for Leno's spot. When Leno's new contract came up (ending in May, 2009), Leno was ahead in the ratings. NBC should have given him a longer renewal. They didn't, and the press asked why. Finally Leno issued an official statement that he was retiring from the show at the end of the contract. He fell on the sword, so it's not his fault.

    ABC started drooling over Leno, too, 'cause they knew he was pissed at NBC. Everyone expected Leno to go to ABC -- or Fox. The prime time show finally offered to Leno by NBC -- and the money to go with it -- was a "last minute fix." (Keeping in mind that Leno always held a ratings lead right up to the end.)
