It's a real shame someone couldn't carry it on in his memory considering its popularity.

Sounds like it was pretty intimidating back then.

giganews is a service that allows a webbrowser to access their news server. Usenet is technically free. Unfortunately, getting access to a news server usually isnt :(

And yes, if it exists, it's on a newsgroup somewhere. even though it's a nono, I use to frequent a trac* lord* news group that regularly had every single one of her movies, photoshoots etc, long after the world ban on her. I hit it every now and again if I'm on although all things pass.

I'm going back and forth with giganews right now. Sent them screenshots, etc. I wish they'd just reset my acct. and get it over with.

So when you download a file from one of these Usenet type sites, you're downloading from their servers right? Presumably getting really quick speeds.

Pretty quick. If you go to giganews.com you'll get the idea, I think.

I attempted a few posts in general which sank faster than the Titanic, but started posting regularly when the sig threads appeared.

Since i never went through an http server to get to a news server i cant say. I'm sure PM can though.

Yep, if you connected directly to the news server you got as fast a connection as was technically possible. When i was heavy into posting and downloading movies for smr back in 99-01 i was averaging about a terabyte a month in transfers on a megabit connection

Not totally true Cylnz, over here every internetprovider has his own newsgroups u can use if your paying for there internet. The only problem with free newsgroups is that u don't have a really long retention. The payserver i use for example has a retention of 400 days, and if i would use my free newsgroups i only have a retentin of about 5 days....

Sort of. I dunno if I could sign up to that being from UK. I didn't really check thoroughly though.

I just use a download manager to get maximum speeds. According to my ISP the maximum possible speed for my area is 9mb, and that's pretty much what I get with IDM.

Yep, the news service is included in your isp bill. At least it always was on roadrunner and the dial ups I had before that. But you were just paying for access to your isps server. There isnt an actual charge for usenet by any usenet entity, because there isnt one. But I get your point.

Giganews is a service that allows webusers to access their news servers for a fee. i think it's like $15 or something. (Dont know, never used them myself)
