Ok, name a female artist today, who, without remixing, dubbing, postprocessing, whatever, just raw voice, that sounds as good as Crystal Gayle?

My money is on Aguilera or Dion, but that's about it.

My wife had hair just like this vid except she was natural blonde. Maybe an inch or two longer. She had to be careful not to sit on it .

A lot of what I dont like about todays singers is they all sound like kids. Well that, and the fact that they cant sing for shit.

Wow. you went old school with Crystal Gayle. :)

I'm a soulful person myself, and when you said "raw" I instantly thought of Mary J. Blige. She doesn't have a great range, but her alto distinct style and emotion are wonderful.
I've heard Corrine Bailey Rae live and she is just deeeelightful.

Yeah. You have to hear the singers on Letterman. It's the just a little more pure sounding then other TV shows (ihho).

They're just chicks being marketed through TV. TV was not as powerful back in the day, so you had to have a better voice.

Sade also had a good voice. Then there's Enya, Lorena McKennitt, possibly Charlotte Church and the Chinese woman that sings true classical.

And much as I hate to admit that anything good could come from it, the spinster from Wales that was on Idol. That woman can fucking SING.

In spite of Hollywood, being marketable to teenagers issnt a requirment to being able to sing.

You're right. Never be afraid to say you like a musician, even though people might throw rocks at you.

Two more from back in the day are Ann Wilson of Heart and Karen Carpenter (yep!).

If you couldnt get laid after to slow dancing to this song in 1985 you were dumber than Forest Gump.
