Scorcese is a fucking brilliant director, but I just never found Goodfellas to be his 'best'.

Like you said, it's kinda inaccessible as a film itself.

I'd say watch it because it IS great, but it's just a tough movie to make it through solely based on it's length and pace.

Roger Ebert says "It's not what the film is about. Its how the film is about what it's about." So the question is, is (whatever movie) good at what it set out to do, even if we don't like the subject matter?

I've sat through Scarface, so it shouldn't be a problem

I give it a 9 out of 10 at succeeding at what it sets out to do.

I'd say yes, whether you personally liked a film you should always be able to respect the artistic aspects of it.

Yeah, same deal. Although I preferred Goodfellas to Scarface 10/1.

I found Scarface relatively boring except for a few great scenes (eg. the big ending & the chainsaw scene)

That's where "I hated that move" is a dangerous statement. Usually the person hated the subject matter, and the scenes that developed the subject.

Screw Roger Ebert... he gave a thumbs down to "The Usual Suspects". That review pretty much screwed any value I have of his film criticisms.

The scene where Montana explains how you get powerful is great.

He blew that one. That's why I like RottenTomatoes.com -- but I like Ebert a lot. I've met him and conversed with him over the 'net. He knows his stuff. (No, I don't always agree with him.)
