If you have the original Win95 or Win95a, it uses the FAT file system, which means it can only handle drives or partitions up to 2 gigabytes.
If you have Win95b, it uses the FAT32 file system, which means you can have a drive or partition up to 2 terabytes.
There is something else to consider. If this machine had 95 on it originally, there is a chance the BIOS will not recognize a hard drive larger than 8.5 GB. You could put one in larger than 8.5 GB, but it will only "see" the limit of the BIOS.
Hard drive manufacturers usually supplies a CD along with the drive. This CD can install what is called a Drive Overlay, it allows the BIOS to "see" the entire size of the drive. This will not overcome the 2GB size limitation of the FAT file system of 95 or 95a.

But b4 you bother with all that, why not just put win98se on it and have what win95 should have been in the first place? I'll give it to you + a key, just to keep any other human being from suffering thru win95.

The win98 setup subdirectory is only 130 megs or so. I have tons of copies and permanent oem keys from gateway you can use. Hell, I still have a couple memorized. (May be confusing the memorized ones with xp keys tho)
