I dont see why not. They had 3 hours till it started to break up. Within 15 minutes the engineers knew they were doomed. They hit an iceberg big even to tear thru 4 inches of solid steel for 60-something feet. That's a big damned iceberg. The engines ran for another 1.5 hours after impact so there was power and time to back up. If they had gone backwards it wouldnt have flooded the bow as fast as continuing to sail forwards scooping up water as fast as possible. The iceberg would have been cold, but not as cold as the water. They could have used carpets, blankets, mattresses furniture etc to keep the people off the ice. They had boats to move people to other bergs near them or to at least keep track of people. They may not have saved everyone, but they could have done a damned site more than jumping in the water. If the iceberg was that huge that it did that much damage, you can guess it was probably the size of a football field. Why not use it?

I don't have one... hard to have one. I said it to Salty but I don't need any pity from members here (because of my handicap).

How large was the iceberg that sank the Titanic?

The exact size of the iceberg will probably never be known, but according to early newspaper reports the height and length of the iceberg was approximated at 50 to 100 feet high and 200 to 400 feet long.

Howdy Riv :wavey: How've ya been?

    What's bridging day?

It had to be huge yes. Backing up may have slowed it down somewhat but not a whole lot I would imagine. I dunno, I only saw the movie. Never really seena documentary on it. I know their wasn't enough boats for everyone - I also don't know why they couldn't raise the boats back up after putting the people on the iceberg to get more people if they decided to do that.

I dont see why they couldnt just back up the boat and offload people right onto the big berg while boats went looking for other bergs to use as well. They had deck cranes and such for cargo, they had 2000 people who were SERIOUSLY motivated to work, why not use it to save themselves?

well, a "good luck" can´t hurt, Iron, right?

bridging day = a "work" day between a holiday and the weekend. people tend to take that day off... i couldn´t.

livestock doesn´t care about holidays and such, so...
(and of course taking off such a bridging day means to take one of your available vacation-days, no "give away" from the bosses ;))

any news about the Bama-coast? guess quite a few are pretty worried down there...
