    Well, let me explain it :

    8 teams on 15 for each conference can access to the playoff. The highest vs. the lowest : 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7. So the most equal dual is 4 vs 5. And it goes like that for each conference. A team must win 4 matches in 7 so it can be only 4 matches or a death match at the end (number 7).

    Each conference : East teams and West teams. Each teams are regrouped with divisions such as Atlantic, Pacific, Northeast (the one with the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins for example).

    But a new system makes that Canadian teams in East will play against West Canadians teams twice instead of one. So for hockey fans in Canada, it's very nice.
