'Mythbusters' episode: Using one?s cell phone while pumping gas/petrol can cause an explosion was busted.

A properly-working cell phone poses almost no danger of igniting gasoline, even when surrounded by gasoline vapor with the optimum fuel-air mix for ignition. The actual risk comes from an electrostatic discharge between a charged driver and the car, often a result of continually getting into and out of the vehicle.

(This myth was revisited in episode 14 and it was busted again.)

You need an open flame or a spark to ignite the gasoline. The spark you get from walking across a carpet barefoot or in socks on a dry day. It's called (ESD) Static Electricity Discharge. That why they use spark plugs in the cars engine in the first place. To ignite the gasoline.

THE PHONE IN THE CAR, away from the fumes. Almost all phones will
indicate "Missed Calls" & the number. So why take the risk? Apparently
it is the key pad or ringer that produces a small amount of electricity

In case you do not know, there was an incident where a driver suffered burns and his car severely damaged when gasoline fumes ignited an explosion while he was talking on his mobile phone standing near the attendant who was pumping the gas. All the electronic devices in gas stations are protected with explosive containment devices, (intrinsically safe) while cell phones are not.

Mobile phone makers Motorola, Ericsson, and Nokia, all print cautions in their user handbooks that warn against mobile phones in "gas stations, fuel storage sites, and chemical factories." Exxon has begun placing "warning stickers" at its gasoline stations. The threat mobile phones pose to gas stations and their users is primarily the result of their ability to produce sparks that can be generated by the high-powered battery inside the phone.

Myth or not a myth, it really doesn't matter to me. I won't take the chance of an explosion so I leave mine in the vehicle when I'm filling up.

 

It's a Myth, the phones have less electricity than the pump at the stations that pumps the gas. Those 3 explotions were the result of the customers sliding his or her ass on their car seats while getting out building up Static Electricity. After getting out of their car then touching something that wasn't grounded Discharging the static charge giving off a tiny spark. That's all the gas vapor needs to ignite. Motorola, Ericsson, and Nokia, printed those cautions in those handbooks because some American Attorney's got together to make a bundle by settling out of court with those companies making them print them stupid handbook warnings. Wich now Motorola, Ericsson, and Nokia now have an excuse to offset the cost of their printing by raising the cost of their phones. We are the loosers. Let Scientist be Scientist not Attorney's. They are just in it for the money.
