No, that was sloppy reporting, primarily in British Tabloids. During her Sophomore year at Brown University in Rhode Island, Emma found that she couldn't do her school work to the standard she required of herself while also doing publicity for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 and preproduction on The Perks of Being a Wallflower and her other professional responsibilities. Since her "A Levels" -- British equivalent to SAT tests -- were high enough to count for a half-year's credit, she took a semester off, so that she could meet her professional obligations. She had always planned to resume college this fall. Brown University's standard program includes spending your Junior year "Abroad," which Emma is doing -- by studying, amusingly enough, in her home town!

The stories you've read about her quitting achool, being bullied out of Brown, and other such nonsense are just that: Nonsense.

Good stuff, leviathan. I hadn't actually seen the stuff about her being bullied, but I did read quotes (or supposed quotes, I guess) in which she stated that she was kidding herself about being able to do school and films. The way the article I read colored it, it made it sound as if she left because she was too famous, not that it was too demanding, so thanks for clearing that up.

In the real world, nobody. In the fantasy world of some New York newspaper's gossip page, fellow students, apparently jealous of her academic (and other) success, who would, according to this gossip column, cry "Three points for Gryffindor" every time she'd raise her hand and come up with the correct answer. The problems with this are twofold: Emma's gone on the record numerous times saying that it never happened. And she also went on the record saying, in essence, "Listen, people all over the planet talk smack about me. You think I can't handle 'Three points for Gryffindor'?"

Unfortunately, the press tends to get bored, and is always lazy, so that one irresponsible pubication can go to press with such abjectly false garbage, and everybody else runs it, prefaced with, "The New York Gossip has reported..."

I admire (and share) your disdain for the media, but I think you're taking it into overdrive here. Where there's smoke, there's fire, and I doubt there was some grand conspiracy by these major newspapers to portray Emma as some bullied dropout. And just because Emma says something doesn't make it so. For all we know, she's covering up what actually went down at the school. Not saying that's what happened, but to blindly take her word for it seems arbitrary.

Not that it matters. She's beautiful, the picture is adorable, and she's at a great school now where she'll doubtless earn herself a great education. No matter what happened before, she's all set to go now.

It's not some grand conspiracy. It's one gossip columnist making crap up because he/she can, and a zillion media outlets carrying it verbatim, using the old and shabby journalistic routine on reporting on what other outlets are reporting. This is the meaning of the lazy press in a nutshell. Nobody else needed to fact-check: They weren't reporting what happened to Emma. They were reporting on what the New York Whateveritwas said happened to Emma. They're all legally covered by saying, "We said it said it on Page Six, and here it is on Page Six."

But they all get to run headlines with Emma Watson's name and a scandalous verb in them, and they all get to sell advertising.

The fact is, especially in the field of entertainment journalism, there's almost never a fire behind the smoke: Just smoke machines. In this particular case, the Associated Press ran a terrific piece on April 29th, 2011, thoroughly debunking the "Bullying" stories. If you google +AP +"'Potter' star Watson denies Brown bullying claims" you can find the actual article, and you can see it not only quotes Watson, but interviews Brown students and staff. The sole allegation in the claim of bullying -- "Three points to Gryffindor!" -- was regurgitated from a bogus report more than a year old, which had already been refuted.

    No fire. It didn't happen.

    Just a fan.

But I also have an ongoing rage at the failings of the modern press, and extensively following Emma Watson -- and it's no doubt the same with a zillion celebs I don't follow -- shows me countless examples of these shabby practices in the name of "Journalism."

The Picture was taken at Worcester College in the Cloisters just outside either the chapel or hall overlooking the main quadrangle, I know it well having worked there for 7years.
