I mean there's an hour difference here from my time zone. I'm in Charlotte @ school this week, the reason why I'm actually able to post. It's almost 11 here.

I crushed a pill and put into a bite-size roast beef lunch meat ball. Blaze ate the roast beef, then all pill pieces trickled slowly out of her mouth onto the floor. Back to the drawing board!

You know where a dog's lock jaw is right? If you'll put your thumb and index finger as far back as possible of their mouth pressing their gums against the back of their teeth it'll hold their mouth open...drop the remains of the pill pieces in the back of her mouth, then ease off her gums from her teeth allowing her to shut her mouth but keeping her head tilted she'll swollow it..just have some water ready for her to wash it down.

Just tried the mouth-open-with-fingers method -- she bit my finger hard as hell. She wasn't trying to bite my finger, so now she feels like hell and is cowering and hiding, thinking I'm going to hurt her.

You didn't do it right if she bit your fingers. Open your hand and rub her throat first, make her trust you again. Then lift her head and slide your thumb and index finger on both sides of her jaws from the very back, push her gums inside her teeth first...don't push too hard...just put enough pressure there and the front of her mouth will open, lift it a little more and you can drop the meds in the back of her mouth. Keep her head tilted back and she will swallow it. It's no different than holding a bass buy it's front lip or picking up a kitten by the nap of it's neck. It don't hurt them it just puts them in a compromised position for as long as you need to do what you need to do.

I've got to jump in the shower but I'll check back in if you're still here before I hit the hay. If you're gone it was truly nice chatting with you again. I wish you luck and hope you well!

I put the pill (the 3rd one - 2 were destroyed) in peanut butter and she ate it. I read on a Web site that when you blow on their nose it invokes nose-licking and swallowing, and all of that worked! Blowing on her nose made her lick her nose and swallow it all!

We had a standard poodle who, when we fed him beef stew, would eat everything except the carrots. He's even lick the gravy off the carrots! Talk about finicky. In his later years he had to take meds to keep his blood from clotting after he had suffered a series of mild strokes. We tried a number of methods and enticements to get him to keep the pills down, without much luck. The procedure that bama described about locking his jaw open ultimately worked best. There was a lot of cooing and sympathetic affection invloved to reassure him it was for the best, but eventually he took to it. After a while the meat ball alternative worked just fine once he seemed to catch on to the idea that he was going to have the meds no matter what. I learned back then that dogs require a lot of patience and understanding sometimes, something I try to remember when dealing with other situations that seem straightforward by my way of thinking. There are many reasons why dogs are man's best friend. :)
