Craig Ferguson (U.S. talk show host from Glasgow) did a week's worth of shows from Scotland. The differences in what things are called are amazing for two English-speaking (basically) countries.

Clear something up for me. I've seen Eddie murphy, Chris Rock and plenty of other black American comedians that talk about nappy head. Seeing as it's only black comedians I'm assuming it's a black thing (in the world's of Richard Pryor, "Hey baby, it's a black thing"). What is nappy head?

Nappy hair is basically ungroomed hair on a black person.

Honestly, if you heard me speak you wouldn't understand it all. I speak Scots, which is a derivative of English, but most English can't understand us. I find it hard to smarten up my speech for outsiders.

"Nappy" by itself means nothing bad here. (Nappy sweater, nappy carpet, etc.). But it takes on racial overtones when the speaker is obviously, or subtly, using it to describe a black man or woman. The "meanness" of the intention depends on the situation. So, it's a tricky word here if you're not obviously referring to a black person.

Or even of you are. If your friend is black, you can tease about anything you'd tease a friend about.

Honestly i have never heard nappy used as a racial slur. Its what they call black peoples hair in its natural form. Not saying ur wrong, just ive never heard it.

So if I was over there and said "nappy", referring to a black man/woman I would be out of order?

Living in the Detroit area (50 percent black including surrounding areas), people know if your intent is mean or not. The up-side is you get racially-mixed groups of friends, which does a hell of a lot toward the general progress of the people here.

If you used in that context, that would invite a dirty look.

 i wouldnt refer to them as nappy. Doesnt make sense. You can refer to their hair as nappy. Its more of a social etiquette. Nappy hair means natural black hair. Sometimes its used to rib someone. Not in a racist way, just a jab. Like if u say damn that guy got some nappy ass hair. Basically you saying his hair looks all messy and uncombed.

I be back....interesting discussion.....as a white person, I would never use nappy in reference to anything associated with black peoples for fear it would be interpreted in a negative vain. For me, it is not worth the risk of offending anyone.

Sort of. Doesnt include facial hair. Heres a sort of call sign sign. If you look at someones hair and it looks like they just got up from a nap and didnt brush their hair, i might say "you got some nappy ass hair." Maybe at one time in years past it had racial undertones but in my experience, that no longer exists. I refer to black/white/spanish..etc. hair as nappy if it looks a fucking mess.

    LMAO

This is a coincidence: My neighbor just called me to see how my dog is doing. He's black. I told him about the discussion we were having (he is a good friend that I can talk to about anything - 60 years old). He said "If you go down to 12th Street in downtown Detroit and call a guy a Nappy you'd get beat up! Then he re-iterated that it all depends on the situation.
