    Scribe, when I was a kid, north central Florida was covered with orange groves....now, you don't see them north of Orlando. A hard freeze in 1955 wiped out the oranges down to Ocala, then about 25 years later another hard freeze killed the trees down to Orlando. There are some exceptions, but they are generally located very close to lakes which tend to keep the temps up a few degrees. I think 28F is the critical temp for citrus.....go below that for a few hours and you lose the crop.....go below that for 6 plus hours and you lose the tree. Christmas of 1985 we dropped down into the mid-teens (F) and did not go above freezing for over three days.

    That's pretty devastating. I can recall the news from '85 about the big freeze down there. Just last month we had sub-freezing overnight temps here in Phoenix where there are large orange and lemon orchards. The growers flooded the orchards for the reason you mention about placing them near lakes. Even when I lived in southern California, the winter could bring freezing temps overnight. The growers there used huge fans to keep the air above the crops circulating to prevent a killing frost.
    Phoenix is too fuckin' hot in the summer. :lol:
