By comparison, Lake Erie, the smallest of the Great Lakes, is 25,667 square km.

cool just watched some pics of the system but all of them are actually connected so its possible to move rather freely between them. Is it natural Connections with streams or was it humans that made a waterway between them?

They're all connected by natural streams and rivers and can be navigated by ocean going vessels. Technically they aren't really lakes, they're inland seas.

Humans helped with some of the connections. I don't know if a person could take a boat all the way around before that.

If you want too look at it purely technical the lake i live next too isnt a Lake its an inner sea since it is connected too the Atlantic Ocean in the south part. It is above sea level but there is a natural stream that brings the water downstream to the open ocean.

if you want to go up to the lake from the suth you need to sluice ( ithink that is the term for it). Through wather stairs. You drive the boat into a paddock and fill it up with water and the boat raises to get up.

I was thinking of the Soo Locks (made by man), connecting Lake Superior with Lake Huron for ship passage, even though there is already a river there.

Before the locks at Niagra (Erie and Ontario) and Sault Ste Marie (Superior and Huron/Michigan) you had to portage.

It was done so some minor ships could go up to get some of the mountain minerals that is near where i live. It was a rather thriving mineing area earlier until the veins tapped out. The ships here isnt as big as you guys get though.

The locks are really narrow so the ships are narrow too. Very long and narrow, but huge. They've been hauling iron ore for over a century now, with no end in sight.
