The canyon is so enormous in every respect that photos can't do it justice...



And when you see it in person, no other experience in your life can give it context. There's just nothing like it. It's so enormous you have to take it in in small measures, except that there's nothing small about any of it.

Damn. Gotta reboot...

 

In that image, the North Rim (dead center) is 11 miles distant. The ridge in the foreground is a good half mile off... There were wonderful skies on Monday, the first day in 3 weeks it hadn't rained. We picked the perfect time to go.

 

Im happy for you....but really jealous

 

Way down there where the trees are is the Colorado River...

 

Its such an optical illusion. The sheer scope of it makes it seem like you are much closer than you really are to the canyon interior.

 

Holy crap! That's a long way down!

 

These are the San Francisco Mtns north of Flagstaff.



There are mountains taller than those inside the canyon.

We stopped for one last look after sunset last night. In the twilight features that are 500 yards distant look to be 30 yards off, like you could easily scramble over to them. It's very disconcerting and frankly it started to creep me out. I had to get away from the rim before I began to feel dizzy. During bright sunlight my vertigo didn't act up once. But at night it was another thing al together.
