Pretty sure the plaque says 2x Platinum. Id be awfully surprised if this twit managed to sell 16 million copies of a single album.

That is for digital sales and STREAMS of ALL of her singles. so anytime someone listens on a satellite radio feed, or any of the streaming services, basically its an estimate of how many times her songs have been played in any fashion PLUS all digital sales, meaning downloads, etc. It's good, but its probably in there with the beebs, maybe not quite as good actually. You can bet that Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga have numbers in the stratosphere. For this particular number, due to early acceptance of digital formats and sheer volume of product and catalog, it would not surprise me to find out the record holder was the Stones. The Beatles were VERY late to the digital party, sp their numbers probably trail, but are certainly much higher than 16 million. It's somewhat of a junk stat. There's no WAY Selena has sold 16 million cd's. When it comes to real hard core meaningful sales stats, it's all Taylor Swift. Over the past 5 years she has obliterated every sales record known to man. It's not even close. And she's done it at retail prices, not dollar giveaways like Gaga. And she's the composer on every song on every album. We are talking many multiple billions. and her success had spilled over into increased sales across the genre, which is why at the age of 23 she was only the 2nd recipient of the Pinnacle award a couple nights ago. The only other recipient was Garth Brooks, who had a similar effect, but whose income records are all Swifts now.

This is a PR award to keep her in the headlines in the Trades. She's doing well, but lets not get carried away.

 

Her albums sell well, but none have sold more than 7 million (according to Wikipedia).
