    From Wikipedia: Curling was invented in medieval Scotland, with the first written reference to a contest using stones on ice coming from the records of Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, in February 1541. Two paintings (both dated 1565) by Pieter Bruegel the Elder depict Flemish peasants curling—Scotland and the Low Countries had strong trading and cultural links during this period, which is also evident in the history of golf.

    They call the bobsled/luge arena the "sliding center." The should call it the "sledding center" since every event has something to do with sliding in one way or another.

    Besides Scotland, I'll bet versions of curling were occurring all over the world, probably earlier than what's been recorded. It's the kind of game that everyone would think of.
