Dickinson as a pure vocalist is better, but the style of their first two albums with the punk of DiAnno is just as memorable and significant as anything they've done. I've had my moments where Somewhere in Time is their best, but that switches because there really is no best Maiden album from the 80's.

Memorable and significant, of course. Those two albums were what put Maiden on the map. But, to me there is a small problem when Bruce sings Paul's songs better than Paul ever did. I was just listening to Wrathchild, and just let me say, Bruce knocked it out of the park. I don't know. Maybe it's just that I am a huge Bruce fan. When he left after Fear, a little piece of me died and didn't come back to life until the dark ages of the band were over. Yes, I can't stand Blaze Bayley.

The Dickson/DiAnno conversation is always a spirited one. At the end of the day it's all Maiden. It's like in Braveheart when the Scottish and Irish were charging each other on the battle field, paused and then hugged.

 

In all seriousness, Maiden to me embody everything embarrassing about metal and it's made a resurgence (all styles of music moving in cycles) due more to people wanting to be retro cool rather than listeing closely to the music. I think their riffs are weak, their sound thin, their vocals really, really, REALLY whiny and high pitched and they seem to write songs that, rather than being naturally evovled pieces of music, they sound like a band that is trying to sound like "what heavy metal sounds like".

I'm not trolling here. I genuinely think that they are a bad band and make really bad music. To me they are one small step away from the hair metal bands of the 80's.

To conclude this episode of Thread Derailment, I encourage someone to ask Jammsbro what defines a real metal band and to give examples, since I am unable to ask him myself.

Paul in my opinion was awesome for the bands era, Murder in the rue morgue , Wrath Child all those songs are still the shit.
